Considering that my tax return was higher then I expected this year. I was thinking of buying a whole new computer to play MKV files and other media.
So I was just wondering what people think of this one.
I will be adding 750GB and 500GB drive i already own and I might purchase a Blu ray drive to replace the DVD drive on this one.

The prices are as follows:
PC $499.99
Bluray $59.99
It is only around $580 including shipping.

I would look for a Phenom II or Core i5/i7 if you could. The Athlon II are outdated.

I wouldn't say that -- sure, a dual core one might be a bit, but the Phenom II X4 is EXCELLENT performance for the price, I hear.

I'd still go for a Phenom II X6, myself, but in a pinch the Athlons are rather good.

See if you can get a similar (or better!) computer for less by buying parts and assembling it. If you're not sure if parts you choose are compatible, I'm sure many of us will be able to help.

Also, do keep in mind that you need special software to play blu-rays. Personally, I would use AnyDVD HD, Media Player Classic Home Cinema, and ffdshow-mt to play blu-rays. With that setup, you'd never have to worry about HDCP-compatible monitors or region locks. (It's also a lot cheaper.)

...I've made MKV files that will play on a 486. Perhaps you meant high-definition H.264 video? (Most likely, since that's about all anyone ever uses MKV for.)

Be sure you have software that can benefit from six cores, otherwise you're better off looking at something faster with fewer cores.

My MKV files are 720p and I would build a computer but I have never heat sinked a chip before.

I hate to deviate, but what on earth settings did you use? That just seems... insane.

PYRATROOPER, it's not really that difficult. If you don't overclock, stock cooling should work. You can find videos around about how to change a heatsink. (On that subject, Socket 775 heatsinks aren't huge pains in the ass like everyone says. I remember it being fine, for me...)

The problem is many of the chips you order don't come with stock heat sinks or cooling fans.

My Phenom II x6 came in a box with a heatsink, thermal paste, and a cooling fan. I don't think they offered it without.

Well, for one, I used Microsoft Video 1 at 320x180 instead of H.264 at 1280x720.

I got it from Newegg, but Tiger Direct also sells many CPUs that include fans and everything. Check the product details, most if not all include a heatsink and fan.

ASUS? Hmmm... all my evil computers that caught on fire were by them. I'd recommend Gigabyte, myself.

I've never had any trouble ASUS. I've had 2 or 3 of them over the past few years. Every brand is subject to bad apples.

Where can I get that software and how much is it.

Based on price I am still leaning towards that pre built PC because it comes with 4GB of DDR3.
