It's nearly here. I'm using a preview build, #11 that is.

It's great, except you have to tell the tabs to behave, and... worst of all, it STILL does that evil memory eating bug. But... I guess we'll see soon enough if they fix that.

I'm hoping they do, anyway.

I'm still not a huge fan of moving all the dialogs into tabs- my understanding of the justification is that it makes more sense on a mobile interface, but I'm not using a mobile interface!

High RAM use seems to just be web browsers in general, nowadays.

I have noticed that Flash tends to jack up Firefox's RAM use really high for me, though - went from 1GB to only 300MB used after killing all of it, once...

Yeah, I have to periodically kill mine. All this posting alone causes it to overload the RAM.

New update. The b12 version scrolls through posts at light speed, and doesn't eat RAM as much as before. Awesome.

I just downloaded the latest nightly (b12). Pretty zippy on my end. I'm preferring it to Chrome right now.

OK, downloaded the latest nightly... so far, looking good (but still 97/100 on Acid3) and there's still that font bug (Arial still looks bold on here even if it's regular )

Hmm. If it performs 'better' than 3.6 on this (roughly) eleven year-old hardware (running a Linux variant), I'll consider it. Otherwise, I'm not sure whether or not I'll upgrade from 3.6 (even on my systems that AREN'T eleven year-old HW, like my Vista systems...).

Can everything definitely be restored to the way 3.6 and earlier look? I never did get into the Chrome (Google's, not Mozilla's) way of doing everything...

More or less, it totally nukes 3.6 speed-wise, and to make it stop looking like a lame chrome version, just go to view, Toolbars, enable all the toolbars you're used to, then disable Tabs on top.

Heh, I read a comment earlier this morning where someone was complaining FF4 was copying Opera, not Chrome.

Maybe I'll see how one of the nightlies performs on the old hardware. It just seems easier to set up a separate installation and profile under Linux. (Not that I've tried it under Windows or OS X, though... )

Hmm... I've read a post on my Linux forum that suggests installing an FF4 nightly may have broken their Thunderbird 3 installation, so maybe I'll wait, too (I need my TB3 to work, darn it ).

Now, if I could just figure out why Gecko-based browsers seem insistent on auto-scrolling through the bookmarks for me...
(I usually keep bookmark folders, with a large number of bookmarks, on the personal toolbars. Often, when I start looking through the bookmarks in those folders, it'll start quickly auto-scrolling back to the top of the folder, for some reason, unless I mouseover the down-arrow. It's happened to me on both Mozilla Suite/Seamonkey and Firefox, on Windows and Linux (I think it also happened to me with both browsers on OS X, but I'm not sure.) Annoying, yes.)

I stopped using nightly builds a few years back when Firefox decided to eat all my profile settings.

TWICE.

That'll turn you off of being on the cutting edge.

It's a beta and not intended to work perfectly, altough even then it should not eat profile data. I hope it did not eat your old FF3 configuration. You sure it deleted or overwrote your profile; or did it just make a new one?
Usually, FF 4 uses your FF3 profile data, what explains why the system checks for incompatible add-ons every time you switch from FF3 to 4 and vice versa.

To be safe and to keep your stable FF3 data, after installation of FF4, do NOT run it yet, but instead:

1.) Close down Firefox if running, also its download window if open.
2.) Start up creating a new profile in Firefox 3 by typing the entire path to that firefox.exe (this runs the profile manager), put in a space and add the parameter

-p

If there are spaces in the file path, ensure to encase it in "", minus the parameter.

3.) Create a new profile. Check or do not check to launch the profile manager every time you launch either Firefox version.
4.) Start up FF4 beta, using your fresh profile.
5.) Profit. Remember to switch back, once you want to continue using FF3, to your old profile

I didn't try it out too much yet, although I installed beta 8 some time ago. As long as this literal ugly font bug is still present, I won't use it, it is really irritating. Also don't want to switch fonts etc.

It's often a good idea to back up your Firefox profile every so often, anyway (even if you're not testing nightlies/betas). For example, there's always a chance an extension can screw something up. I used to just regularly back up my bookmarks, history and password files, until FF3 changed the profile directory structure.

The RAM usage in preview build 11 is HORRENDOUS. Seriously, nearly a gigabyte is used for ten tabs!

Nightly build 12b makes this better (but not as good as 3.6) but I'm gonna go back to 3.6 until the official release is out, since I want my profile more than to test something out and don't really feel like backing up.

I haven't upgraded yet, but I have not heard anything about the theme that I like.

I wish there was a way to just upgrade the browser engine without all the useless Chrome imitation, because I want the speed...
