Yeah, really...

Google has run a sting operation that it says proves Bing has been watching what people search for on Google, the sites they select from Google’s results, then uses that information to improve Bing’s own search listings. Bing doesn’t deny this.

As a result of the apparent monitoring, Bing’s relevancy is potentially improving (or getting worse) on the back of Google’s own work. Google likens it to the digital equivalent of Bing leaning over during an exam and copying off of Google’s test.

“I’ve spent my career in pursuit of a good search engine,” says Amit Singhal, a Google Fellow who oversees the search engine’s ranking algorithm. “I’ve got no problem with a competitor developing an innovative algorithm. But copying is not innovation, in my book.”

The article is longer, and you should read it to know exactly how Google found out Bing was copying their results.

Personally, I don't use Bing at all and this is just ... ugh.

What I'm curious is is how exactly Bing is getting the results- I mean, it's well-known that the browser toolbars are in part for data collection, but if MS is using just plain IE on default settings (the "suggested sites" feature the article mentions) that sounds a lot more problematic.

Once again, Microsoft fails to come up with anything on their own, instead "borrowing" from someone else -- it's a classic American corporate strategy. I wonder if Ballmer will realize that it's not the 90s anymore, and that kind of thing isn't going to end well if they keep it up -- Microsoft is not the only game in town like it used to be, they can't just roll over the competition using their money.

I've never liked Bing. It always had this sleazy copycat feel to it. Now I guess I know why!

Well done, Microsoft. Keep up the good "work."

Another attempt to Internet Explorer the competition to death.

Of course, I prefer Yahoo! anyway.

Doesn't Yahoo use Bing or Google? I forget. They're both pretty sleazy, either way.

Yahoo! used Google for awhile, then used their own results, and now they use Bing...

So, Yahoo! could be copying Google via Bing!

How hilarious.

I don't, but apparently I am? But maybe not, because Yahoo! is copying Google via Bing?

It's all very confusing. I try not to think about it too hard.

This is beginning to sound worse than the plotline to Back To The Future.

Well, Google still holds the position of the search engine that people make into a verb. When was the last time you heard someone say they were going to Yahoo! or Bing something?

I think the implication of the article is even people who install the Bing toolbar actually use Google instead.

No one in their right mind is going to Yahoo! something, that just sounds dirty.
