Pretty much every computer I use at home has had Windows installed by me. After having to install Windows 32 times for a class I was TAing... I just do it, even on machines that are pre-installed. It's a good habit, I find.

I install XP on various things, and it never breaks.

Never installed Vista, but a preinstalled version of it ran great for me. Best version of Windows, from my experience.

You're lucky. A friend of mine had it on their laptop, and it always blacked out when booted up. He'd have to use ctrl-alt delete, then re-log in... every time.

Awful.

I used Windows 98SE until 2006, then Windows 2000 for a few months... so far, 98SE, 2000 and 7 are my three favorite Windows versions

98 FE on the other hand, does nothing but freeze, at least on my old, crummy eMachine. I wish I could have tried SE on it...

I remember wanting to switch to Linux after Microsoft claimed ME was "The Future." No proper DOS stuff, endless freezing, and worse compatibility? Who'd ever want that?

I remember hearing that Windows 98 was going to give up all DOS functionality. How was I to play my games?

As of late, I've really been starting to want to shift over to either Linux or OS X.

I have a guide ready to installing Snow Leopard, though - I just need time to try it.

The silly part is, even Windows 2000 properly supports a subset of DOS stuff. They were just waaay ahead of their time--even then, they should have started work on their virtual machine stuff earlier.

(Since W2K and later just use a virtual machine miniature thing to run it.)

I switched to Linux in 2004 after my Windows machine got virused. I eventually went back to using Windows, though, to be able to run more programs.

I remember laughing at the evil CRT iMacs back when.

"When the monitor goes out, your computer is dead!"

I'm pretty happy with Windows 7 x64. My only complaint is that it completely mangles parts of Unicode that work fine in Windows XP.

I never liked 98SE... we installed it on a machine that formerly ran 95, and it struggled under the weight, so that kind of biases me. (Though it did allow us to use DSL, which was nice)

I had a lot of trouble with 98 on my Compaq. I think it was FE, but I'm not sure. It was like a BSOD machine.

Of course, with a special application, DSL might work on Windows 95.

I got DSL to work on Windows 3.1, after all.

I've successfully ripped the monitor out of an eMac and replaced it with an LCD, and I know that it's possible to do the same with an iMac.

I've tried many alternative OSes, such as AROS and Haiku, but unfortunately neither of them is ready for primetime. Also tried ReactOS, which is basically "Freedows"
