Well, I had an interesting experience today. Dunno how or why (probably a lightning strike), but a transformer on a power pole blew up today. Basically, I'm in the library when for about 3/4ths of a second the power browns out, then comes back on normally. Nothing wrong, just the wind or something, right? WRONG. As I'm leaving the library, the lights start to flicker. And flicker. (For an accurate comparison, hit the Hollywood button on your consoles now. I am not joking.) So, I'm outside the entrance to A wing fm the schools central circle (the school is a circle with 5 wings extending off it). My vice-principal runs by, yelling to go in the classroom at various students. The Janitor and one other person run out into the courtyard there... So I follow them. When I get out, I can hear a loud electric buzzing, like (again) in Hollywood movies where electricity is arcing around. I get out, and on the top of a power pole there, there are three Fires. CYAN FIRES. I can see them burning veyr brightly, and they are burning furiously. So I go in, and while I'm inside getting my teacher ot show her, a transformer on a pole about 3 poles down exploded, and yet again it's like in movies from what I heard from other people there. So woo, my entire english class was spent int he dark.

We got a false fire alarm today. We sighed and just sat in class when it went off.

Excitingness must happen at our school. Or, at least, I must somehow see CYAN FIRES and explodey-electricity.

Oh yeah!

I went back and looked at the pole in question... There was no evidence that anything had ever happened, but the crews had not even touched the pole!

Sounds suspicious to me. Anyways...

We have had many false alarms in school. You can't imagine how many we had last year. Was it... 34?

Machi-Machi v. Kyan!
Last time I was involved in a transformer exploding was getting a power surge on the end of an electricity line at a house we use to be at. And yea...it does some pretty weird shit before it's ready to go.

Woke me up at 1 AM just before it went when my ceiling fan starting going berserk (as in, it kept going faster and faster until sparks flew from it). Immediately after that, the power went off.

Now, of course, I just got up...so I'm fumbling around like an idiot trying to figure out where the light switch is and if this is a dream or not and all of a sudden I'm hearing muffled yells from down the way. Electrical fire in my parents' room. They got that taken care of.

Long story short, we got it taken care of by 4 AM. They turned back on the power and I was getting ready to lay back down to go to bed, lights off and everything, and all of a sudden:

MRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR -fishfhfhs- -beeeeeeeeeeeyoooyoapff...-

Power re-surged, burnt in my surge protector on my comp, the alarm that it had been triggered went off and simultaneously melted when it went from high pitch to low to none. Left a black mark in my carpet. Comp survived it.

And this was THE MORNING I started high school...

No scary and exciting electrical experiences here, thankfully.

Whee, reliable power supply.

The only time we have power problems is when it snows and branches fall on power lines, causing a substations to burn out. The lights usually come back on in a few seconds, but one time the remaining substations couldn't handle the load and another burned out. We were without power all night.

Could've been worse, some people had no power (and therefore no heat) for almost a week afterwards. That was some storm.

I've been through two particularly nasty blackouts.

#1: Living way the hell out in the middle of nowhere, a hurricane wipes out tons of power poles, trees, etc. Probably the worst storm I've ever seen. Power was out for a week. It made eating difficult, since a) everything in the fridge and freezer went bad, b) we couldn't very well use our electric stove, c) power was out in town too, so buying food was a hassle, and d) we had well water drawn by an electric pump. Yeah, that sucked.

#2: The great blackout of 2003, when the whole East coast went out. Well, it wasn't that bad, but it was certainly notable. I woke up 10 minutes into it, and as I generally do, turned on a portable radio to listen for news reports that might explain what was up. At first they were saying all of North America was down. We ended up sleeping over at a friend's place, and the power came back on around 4:30 AM, literally seconds before I fell asleep again.

I've had some PSUs die for various reasons too. (Mostly age, in one case a storm that kept flickering the lights on and off really fast burned it out.) Needless to say I plug all my stuff into good strong surge protectors. I'd like to get a UPS, but those are freaking expensive.
