And I mean really old ones.

I've switched to using an old one we have, after I heard of their increased efficiency. It definitely seems like I am typing faster with it, but I can't be entirely sure. In any case, it is very interesting to use it.

And by clicky, I mean the keyboards which run using springs or similar--usually old keyboards with 486es or older, often known as IBM Model M keyboards. I have a knockoff made by ZEOS here, myself.

I wonder if anyone else here uses one...

It's an enigma
----------------------------------------------------
I've never heard of a clicky keyboard being more efficient than a... I guess non clicky one?

I never did like the feel of huge keys vs little chicklets. They felt like I had to exert too much effort for every press.

Now if only I could train myself to type correctly more often...

Well, the non-clicky ones don't spring back as quickly and are easier to make mispresses with. However, the clicky ones can be a bit... noisy... heh.

I used to use the clicky-type keyboards, but since I got this laptop a few years ago I've become used to the flatter types, and when I try to use the clicky ones now it's too noisy.

I used to think the clicky ones were fun to type on because of the clicking noise These days, I tend to prefer low-profile keyboards, though.

It will definitely take me a bit of time to get used to the noise... especially since I am typing easily 90 WPM with this thing, as I usually do.

#59
Mine definitely feels closer to those old keyboards than flat ones, although it's not exactly old (maybe 2 years), doesn't look old, and isn't that noisy I still have the keyboard from my old Pentium 200MHz (much more like those old ones), but its plug won't fit into any newer computer I got since then ...

I at least like it better than the new ones we recently got at work, which:
- are wireless (works fine but needs batteries)
- have thin flat keys (makes me hit adjacent keys a lot more, enough to slow me down)
- moved the Insert, Delete, etc. keys around (so now I often mess up, get used to them a bit, then get lost again when I'm back to my "normal" keyboard at home)
- replaced the menu key with a Fn key, and moved the menu key (which I often use) to Fn+PrintScreen, which is where ScrollLock would be
- have no indicator at all for CapsLock and NumLock (that's shown on screen after installing their driver, which at least lets me remap some keys or special functions)
- can't auto-repeat multiple keys at once (unlike the older one and mine here)

Both keyboards are from Logitech, too

Ah. I got an adapter to let my large keyboard plug fit in the small one. It works quite well.

I prefer the chicklet ones if they can br springy enough. The apple keyboards are decent enough but get worn out after a little while and become mushy and not so great. My laptop also has a similar style chicklet keyboard which has been alright so far but also a but mushy, but better than most laptop keyboards which feel like you're pushing in to foam.

High school had a few model M keyboards around, just out of need from not being able to afford anything else. they weren't too bad to use, I always found them pretty neat. The size is a bit of an issue but maybe when I get a house it won't be so bad.

Yeah, that was the problem with my eMachine keyboard--it had become rather mushy from 11 years of overuse.

Clicky keyboards are better than squishy ones, at least in my experience. I find that I make a few too many typos using the soft ones... personal preference I suppose.

What I don't like are really sensitive keyboards. Like if I barely tap a key and it registers the keystroke

I figured how to avoid making typos with more sensitive keyboards, but the clicky one has helped make me make even fewer typos, so it is nice.

Had to remap the useless Scroll Lock key to get myself a Windows key, though.

the word you guys are looking for is mechanical and membrane keyboards.
I have a model M I don't use (no windows button ) and an ABS M1 I used to love but kinda ruined.

now im using some shitty membrane board and really miss the M1

Flat laptop style keys > Clicky/Mechanical keys > Ordinary keys.

I'm one of the few who seem to prefer flat keys for my typing, been thinking of buying a new keyboard though, might try out a clicky one.

Me, I never use the Windows or Menu keys and always thought of them as superfluous additions to the keyboard that screw up Ctrl and Alt by being hit accidentally a lot.

Another key I don't use is Caps Lock, and I've disabled it on a lot of my computers. I just use Shift for all-caps, and I keep hitting Caps Lock by accident otherwise and getting "yeH" instead of "yeah" or whatever.

I use a duplication of the Model M model that came with an iBuyPower machine (if you're not familiar with iBuyPower, they're an off-brand owned by MSI -- they basically sell you a PC but offer next to no support. Essentially they sell "starter" machines that are easy to customize later.) It has the nice clicky, solid feel to it. It has a Turbo key left from older legacy days, but it also has the annoying huge backward-L-shaped Enter key, so I end up accidentally hitting Enter instead of | or \ a lot with the thing.

Having an extra couple modifiers are rather invaluable, especially in linux, where you can reconfigure shit to use Super instead of Alt so it doesn't interfere with applications, where Super and I forget what the menu key is called, I think Turbo or Ultra or something similarly weird, are rarely used.

I actually type well on both keyboards. (Believe it or not, though, I'm fastest on a netbook keyboard. Yep.)

I don't know what my desktop's keyboard is - some kind of fusion, or something? They're kinda like the mechanical keys, except they're quite a bit flatter.

Well, the netbook keyboard is smaller, so I guess you have to move your fingers less...

On my netbook I would be fast on it, except that it's the early Eee PC model with a tiny shift key, so I constantly hit up instead of shift and so constantly correct myself... even now that I have had it awhile, I can't get used to it.
