I searched through the ROM hoping to find some unused text, as I'm assuming there must be some like with OoT.

And guess what, I found something!

This part of text:

That's the Giant's Mask, isn't it?

That truly is a rare mask...


It's obviously unused, since you can only wear the Giant's Mask in the Twinmold boss room, so there's no way to talk to the Happy Mask Salesman with the mask on.

I'm still searching further, but wow, this game has lots of text.

When you play this scene, it shows the countdown and zooms away from Cremia and the cow. It also displays two empty messages, and plays the Milk Bar music. If you abort the cutscene, the timer and the target counter appear and Link has the bow equipped to B, just like in the target practice. This strongly suggests another target practice was planned, but it was scrapped. For reference, this scene uses the setup from the ending (with three "alien" balloons in a row in front of the stable).

I'm curious as to whether these text bubbles are blank in the Japanese version, as I know the beta Hylian Loach's item description in the English version is blank, but has the text still intact in MM (J). Would someone be so kind as to check?

I tried talking to the Happy Mask Salesman by using the "Link's Face Modifier" code on the Virtual Console, US region. He said the exact text Prince Kassad found, and it even highlighted the mask's name in red, IIRC. I'm not sure for whom it crashed on, or which method they used to wear the mask, but it definitely didn't crash for me.

Hmm. Normally when you try to put on that mask, the game tries to make you giant, which freezes the game outside of the Twinmold boss battle. But the Face Modifier cleverly avoids this - good find.

Should probably mention that the MM preview demo contains loads of text that is different to the retail one.

One example is Lottery Tickets (final is Lottery Shop). Another is Did my aunt put you to work? (Demo) vs. Did some middle-aged woman put you to work? (final) There's sure to be more, but it will probably take a lot of time to research everything.

Why yes, it does help. Makes it easier to compare all the text.

Also, haha:

You got a Hero's Shield! It can reflect certains kinds of light. Press R to assume a defensive position. If you press R while Z Targeting, you can move while defending yourself.

You got a Mirror Shield! Press R to assume a defensive position. If you press R while Z Targeting, you can move while defending yourself.

They totally mixed up the two shields. At least they caught it for the final release.

I think the Dog Race's name might've been changed because they wanted make the race's name a parody of the Daytona 500, which is the biggest race in NASCAR.
