Just be careful to move towards your major, otherwise you can spend 5 years getting A's like me, and then still not have enough classes to finish your major any time soon.

Yeah. That really sucks.

Also, don't trust people when they tell you some pre-made thing like the IGETC will do. Figure out what universities you want to go to (if any) want instead. They may want it, or they may not, but counselors at these places are more in favor of giving generic, useless advice on these matters and should not be trusted.

Also, if you don't go to class you are just wasting everyone's time, and contrary to popular belief, schools are NOT just in it for the money.

Which is why teachers can just turn around and not give a student a mark stating that he "did not enter" the class because he never showed up; meaning it doesn't count on the average, the student's screwed over and the university pockets the money. That's how it works here!

(And in Canada, the tuition rates are hiked by the provincial governments, not the universities themselves. That's my understanding of it. Rate stays roughly the same regardless of whether or not an university is ranked high or low, and in a lot of areas you don't have much of a choice if you want higher education.)

My alma mater seemed to love auto-fails and such, presumably to squeeze as much money as they could out of people

I was once in a class where you could get an auto-fail for turning in an assignment one second late. No exceptions. You get swine flu or a flat tire, you flunk.

Was this in some Detroit college or something? If that's it, then that doesn't surprise me the slightest.

Yeah, it was just outside of Detroit. I still shudder when I think of that place.

So expensive, so unforgiving, they'd schedule a lot of classes in the same few time slots, they had mostly early-morning and evening classes creating big afternoon gaps, they required what seemed like more humanities credits than major-specific credits...

To be fair, you don't auto-fail here unless a professor is a real SOB. But it's easy to dock marks for attendance and throw out the class if the student simply doesn't show up.

I think if people in my college miss two weeks of a lesson in a row without it being an authorised abscence (i.e. doctor note or a phone call), it is assumed that you aren't taking the course anymore.

More or less. Some teacher just tie it into a mark for attendance. You know... 10/10 if you miss no classes, 9/10 if you miss one (or two because some teachers give leeway), and so on.

That's actually a pretty good motivator to not cut class. :\

I did have a teacher who, after realizing that people were cutting class a lot to avoid his unintelligible lectures, gave us extra credit if we showed up every day.

Also, the final exam had the right answers to the multiple-choice questions in a different font

Easy A, but I didn't learn much.

This HAD to be a mistake. I've had tests/exams where there were 4 answers and 1 was an obvious joke answer, but to make it that blatant?

Probably.

His first language was Arabic (immigrated from Egypt to the USA). Maybe he couldn't tell one Latin-alphabet font from another.

I had an Iranian math teacher when I was at UMaine. She was a total sweetheart. I took a business math course with her after. :3

She also gave me leniency when my calculator died RIGHT BEFORE the exam. And she let me run to the campus store, get batteries, only to find out that it wasn't the problem.

Tester's worst nightmare.

I had a backup calculator ready just in case... it would be a simple, basic one but it's better to have something than nothing at all and guarantee failure.

Moral of the story: always bring spare batteries with you whenever you take an exam (although you might need a screwdriver if it's one of those that takes a CR2032 or LR44s )

My calculator uses AAAs, plus it will warn me on low battery several days ahead of time

Or always replace the batteries with fresh ones the morning of an exam. :\ Either way works. Better safe than really, really, REALLY sorry.

I, fortunately, have yet to have batteries die at an absolutely critical time. Usually they peter out during homework, making it inconvenient for me to go back to my room and paw around in my battery drawer for them.

Also: update!

Last night I went to a Women In Technology meeting. One of the girls there was a Phi Sig member! After we were done with the meeting, we walked over to the Phi Sig meeting together. She's a pretty awesome person, and it's good to know I have interests that naturally coincide with some of the members' activities

We had skit night last night, which was pretty fun. We had to use a random word (ballet) with a random item (giant turkey stuffed animal and paper towels) and somehow create a skit that had to do with Valentines Day. We created a "musical" and used the towels to make tutus and cupid sashes. Cupid couldn't decide who the turkey should fall in love with, and overall, we just ad-libbed and generally had fun

Tonight is teamwork night. I can't wait to see what we're going to do
