Such was the story of the PS3. The actual console didn't start turning profit for almost 4 years. They made money off software, other hardware (controllers, etc), and downloads. The same will go for the NGP. The download model is nearly pure profit. Besides development costs, there are no physical media cost to deal with.

It looks good and I do want it, but I won't be getting it immediately. The 3DS will probably tide me over for a while.

Where did you hear that? I didn't see that anywhere, and I just skimmed the Engadget liveblog... a cellular model seems interesting enough (and that's the model Sony has to compete with), but if they were going to do that why didn't they put a full-scale phone into the thing? (As opposed to just 3G data... I guess VOIP might lead to it being basically the same thing though)

I was quoting this post to make a point that they haven't even announced prices.

I'm just not feeling this big sense of anticipation and excitement since this was announced. Sony's obviously going for broke with the features but we probably won't have a good idea on how big an impact this could have until GDC and E3.

The key is the price point. Sony has been known to sell at a loss early on (-$100 for every PS3 sold at the start, I think) so that might suggest a lower price... I'm guessing $299 or $349.

Apparently GameStop had a dummy page up for it that suggested a $999 price point; that was quickly taken down since it was a placeholder, but that also would have been the kiss of death. XD

Paulguy's Post configuration
I could see them going in with AT&T and/or Verizon or something with a price drop with 3G data plan contract. I don't see it being less than $500-600 normally, and likely more. The only way people will really buy it is if it's $300 or less...

Looks like there may be a WiFi version after all. I didn't think they would go for that model on a handheld but I guess its pretty normal these days. I'll go on the record saying that the 3G will be $299.99 and the WiFi only will be $269.99

the original PSP games that are downloadable from from the PS Store will be compatible however UMD will be not because of a new flash game media the are using because it can save to it to the card itself and to a memory stick and it gets better battery life.

To me that is a major + because I hated the UMD because of the breakage of the drives and the disc protectors.

...what, you mean its not that? god damn Sony getting my hopes up..

the mobile thing seems...neat, but a bit much. I want my game console to be a game console already. The DS lite was about the pinnacle of what I need my handhelds to do in terms of non-gaming features (not to say the 3DS isn't looking sweet but still) ... if I wanted a phone that could do all that stuff, I'd get an iPh--oh wait, I have an iPhone. and a DS. And they serve two distinct purposes, the way it should be.

I'm sorry but what? Nintendo has been just as worse as Sony with their ports. Considering that when they announced the 3DS half the line-up was "old game 9292392.... IN 3D", I don't see how that now Sony is going to do any worse in that regard (except now it going to be .... "this game.... IN SUPER PORTABLE HD")

Teyla: big deal. "derp derp derp no backwards compatibility lolololo" I'm just plain tired of that. I've said it before: expected every darn company to support their ~7 years old system in the next gen is just annoying. Besides, that complain was already made with PSP GO and made much more sense, seeing as it wasn't another system entirely.

Andddddddd, putting an UMD drive on that thing would just make it bulkier and much less portable.

....

Seems to me that there's complaining because lol Sony. Of course there aren't gonna be tons of games announced or anything. That's what conventions or stuff like the E3 is for, plus it's only released in a year.

From Nintendo themselfs, there's Star Fox 64 and Ocarina of Time. Kid Icarus isn't one, Pilotwings Resort, Steel Diver, Nintendogs + Cats, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart 3DS, aren't either. And SF64 and OoT do recieve updates other than the 3D effect, both in visual and gameplay.

I have to admit, tho, that other companies have more apparently simple "IN 3D!!" ports coming up and it is rather early to say all that much about the NGP's software library. Yet the pure "better hardware spec approach" that Sony's doing does invite lazy developers to port over their existing games unchanged, compared to at least adding that 3D effect, as gimmicky as it may be, depending on the game.

Of the 30 launch window games announced, only those 2 are "ports", but at the same time, both of those games are 12-13 years old. Games like Call of Duty came out... what, a year or so ago? Or less?

Paulguy's Post configuration
UMD/original PSP compatibility would be very complex and difficult, considering the original CPU was MIPS and the NGP's CPU is ARM, and no matter how powerful it is, emulation would be quite difficult, and probably give dreadful battery life.
