So the long wait is finally over, we now know what it looks like and what it's called. But you have to wait again to buy it... until Christmas!

Sony has just come clean with its next-generation PlayStation Portable. It's actually codenamed NGP and will revolve around five key concepts: Revolutionary User Interface, Social Connectivity, Location-based Entertainment, Converging Real and Virtual (augmented) Reality. It will be compatible with the PlayStation Suite and is backwards-compatible with downloadable PSP games and content from Sony's PlayStation Store.

- 5" OLED touchscreen @ 960 x 544
- Quadcore CPU AND Quadcore GPU!
- Dual analog joysticks (not nubs)
- Rear-mounted touch panel
- Accelerometer
- WiFi/3G/GPS/Bluetooth capabilities

This is quite the beast of a little machine. I can't imagine the battery life will be stellar, but it obviously can't be that bad when it has to compete in the portable market. The quad CPU & GPU is amazing. I haven't heard about the actual speeds yet. They weren't kidding when they said this would have PS3 quality graphics. While it may not push out 1080p quality the same way the PS3 can, it doesn't have to. It only has to push it out at 960 x 544 and I think it will achieve even better FPS than the PS3 at that small yet sufficient resolution.

I highly doubt that I will get one right away (unless they do a remake of Final Fantasy 7 and put War of the Lions on the Playstation Network) but I may eventually get one. iPhone gaming is great, having it all compact in your phone and easy to access. But sometimes you just want a little more. This machine seems to offer a lot more. So maybe once the price drops by $50 (which is usually in the first year).

Edit: Moar pics

That rear-mounted touchpanel seems interesting... certainly something I'd have to try in person before giving judgment, I suppose.

The "PlayStation Suite" they announced for Android phones also seems pretty interesting.

NGP...

NGP...

Really sony?

And apparently, they're copying the touchscreen portable trend too. :/

They still have full d-pad and analog stick control, so they're ahead of the game. It makes some games more interesting and others really bad. I think they also want a part of the "quick and easy" $0.99 game market that Apple has made popular, so it makes sense.

The touch screen thing makes some sense (though, on the back?) ... it's not so much a fad as something that has really taken off.

3D, on the other hand, seems like jumping on the new bandwagon. Derp.

>>ESTABLISHING LINK...DONE.    >>FETCHING POST DATA...DONE.    >>EXECUTING POSTDISP.BIN...

I personally kinda want it to fail like the previous "NGP" back in 1998. Now objectively speaking, there's two things that stick out about the system that make me wonder a bit: Battery running time and the system's originality in general.

The battery runtime was bad enough on the old PSP in my opinion (PSP-2000, around 2 hours at 222 MHz and the battery is half empty?), but what's it gonna be with a quad-core CPU and GPU, as well as an OLED display? Of course, the 3DS isn't exactly the longest lasting machine out there either... It's why I look back at my old DS Phat and praise its battery life, which hasn't really ever let me down, with hours of Pokemon SoulSilver without having to recharge.

Now the "originality" thing... What's so special about the system? It's a smartphone with game controls, and as far as I'm aware without telephone capabilities (besides 3G for data), more or less. Sorry that I keep comparing it to the 3DS, but that one's at least got the whole stereoscopic 3D aspect going for it, not to mention original game titles and in turn possible uses for the 3D effect, where I fear the NGP might end up with many downgraded PS3-to-NGP ports and such.

Also, probably less important overall but it is for me, there's backwards compatibility, or the lack thereof in NGP. I don't know if anything in that regard has been announced yet, but I take it if backwards compatibility to the PSP will be possible in the end, you'll need to re-buy your games via PSN as digital downloads. They scrapped that UMD-to-download trade-in idea for the PSPgo back then, so I don't see them do it for this machine.

Oh well, enough ranting from me. It does have a chance to kick the 3DS into the nuts if they do it right, but I'm not sure if that'll happen.

Yeah, but the front touchscreen is "Multitouchfingerslol because stylus touchscreens are old."

I fucking hate finger touchscreens. Give me a stylus over that any day.

I mean, especially for, y'know, drawing shit. :|

The battery is still worse than the DS line, and the 3DS even took a battery life hit.

The only thing about this that's special is 4 cores and an HD screen.

Plus, we don't know the price, and I'm expecting it to be expensive.

Trust me, this will not do well. It probably won't be as good as the PSP even, because hey, you can play gameboy on your PSP. :|

The 3DS is already pushing my limited budget. I can only imagine the astronomical price this behemoth will command.

Remember, this is homebrew only.

People WILL find a way to run homebrew on this thing. Hell, it looks fucking tempting.

I just wonder what kind of menu/OS this thing will run... hopefully not Android, since knowing Sony they'd take all the benefits of Android right out of it.

People have said the 3DS's nub is comparable to a PS2 analog stick instead of a shitty PSP one.

I'll believe it when I see it myself.

Note though that it only has one, this has two. There's quite a few PSP games that illustrate why a second one - even a second shitty nub - would be helpful. The Star Wars Battlefront games and the portable Armored Cores especially.

It's not new compared to consoles, but it's new for a handheld and it's something I can immediately see the use of.

I've never had a problem with the PSP's nubs, so I didn't even consider the difference here as important. But as you say, people have different opinions.

I was also thinking more of significant things being done here, than just a relatively minor difference (as, nub or stick, both are analog) in one part of the system - the 3DS's 3D display is something like that, or hell, the PSP's analog control before. The NGP does not look like it's going to deliver anything like this, at least to me.

$569.99 US for the 3G model

Judging by how other things are priced (iPad, etc.), 100 less for normal.

Yeah, good luck Sony, you'll need it.

And no Modnation Racers. FOR SHAME!

Actually the system's price range and the total lack of discs for games as well as no games that aren't remakes of games that already exist (I'll accept LBP though) totally drives me away.

It won't be that high. Sony might as well not produce it if they can't get it below the $299 mark. I don't think they'll have different models, such as 3G and non-3G. Its just built in and only for data, who knows how that will play out. I'm guessing its going to be $299, which is still very steep for a handeld but given the 5" OLED and quadcore CPU & GPU, I can't fool myself it would be only $249.

$299 will probably be as low as it can possibly go, yet any higher and they'll be shooting themselves in the foot.

Which puts them is a tough spot. Lose money cause production cost > sales cost, or lose money because sales cost > what people want.

The former. Make up the money from PSN downloads and other methods.

More people with it = more profit later on. I somehow doubt Sony is in such bad straits that they can't afford a loss right now.
