Yet here I am. I've been thinking about this since last semester. A girl on my hall is a member of Phi Sigma Pi, a national honors fraternity. After hearing about it, I was intrigued. However, I barely had time to sleep, eat, and shower, let alone participate in Greek life.

This semester, I have time for it. At first I was skeptical. "Honors" "fraternity" seemed like an oxymoron to me. Fraternity conjures images shown to me on tv and in movies: idiots drinking beer and eating pizza. As with many media stereotypes, it's probably exaggerated or even false, but it's still the image that comes to mind. It is not an image that is compatible with "honors" or "scholarly."

However, the girl on my hall is really awesome. People say you're the average as your friends, so logically, the people in the frat should be really awesome too.

So I went to the interest meeting tonight with an optimistic yet skeptical attitude. I decided it couldn't hurt to check it out. If the members were ditzes and douchebags, I would leave immediately and never look back. If they seemed cool, I would stay around and talk to them.

They seemed pretty awesome. I met my hallmate's brother there. When he asked me why I wanted to join, I listed my reasons. He said that those were exactly the reasons why people should join. I made a good impression on everyone else I talked to, too.

So, yeah. Here I am, getting ready to rush a frat. Never did I ever think that I'd end up doing that.

I never had any interest in frats but my best friend joined one in university and she loved it. Granted, there was a little bit of drinking involved (since we ARE in Montreal and all) but there was a lot of charity/university work as well. There's always room for a healthy balance.

I have no Greek here, except for a few that I do not qualify for, being a white dude. There is talk of letting in a branch of the National History Fraternity, or whatever it is called, which I thought about joining but have not.

There's different types of Frats. Party ones generally are separate and well marked. Honor ones exist mostly for the people who want good grades and good stuff to add to their transcript hang out. So yeah; you shouldn't have too much problem with it, compared to the stereotypical ones you have already managed to avoid.

What MM88 said.

I never joined any Greek organizations. I remember when they'd have them set up in the atrium every fall, but I just wasn't interested. At the time, I only really knew about the "party, drink, and have sex" type of fraternity.

I'm pretty sure that like...all the frats at UMaine were ones that ones that drink heavily, so I avoided them all. I'm pretty sure things would've clashed with my straight edge lifestyle and I wouldn't have been able to live there for long with all the crazy-ass partying.

*high-fives Rick* Non-partiers unite!

I've tried alcohol. Didn't like the taste and didn't want to lose control of myself. So I don't drink it.

I'm like a big kid, I think. I'm not interested in alcohol, sex, or drugs. I'd rather build something with Lego bricks or run around aimlessly

This is pretty much me. I can tolerate it if it's heavily masked (nooo hard liquor) but it still tastes gross to me. Plus my girlfriend had an angry/violent drunk for a father, and I'd rather her feel comfortable. Then there's one of my friends, who is 16 and drinks heavily whenever her older siblings are home (because then it flows freely at their house). I just don't see the point to it at all. I can be perfectly happy and fun without alcohol.

I get drunk on caffeine. People ask me whether I have been taking Oxycodone or Benzo something or whatever it is. Of course, the answer is no. I am just completely insan--silly.

This is why I do not need nor desire alcohol, for as I have read, getting drunk would just cause me to act more 'normal.' No, I reject normality as far as behavior is concerned.

Eccentric but straight edge is how I play it.

I've never gotten drunk because I don't allow myself to. Simple. Everything in moderation.

Granted, it is funny to see someone go from sober to drunk in a blink of an eye, but... the aftereffects might not be so funny. :\

Pff, getting drunk is over-rated any way. I do like me some alcoholic drinks, though a few of the ones intended to "put some hair on your chest" I'd gladly stay away from as Colin said, everything in moderation give me some coconut rum though and all bets are off (says the guy who has been drunk twice. Yeah, I'm pretty responsible )

I guess you could say I drink regularly...

...in that the interval is regular. It's literally one year between glasses of wine.

I couldn't bring myself to get drunk - I'd be afraid of what I'd be like. Probably the one that just falls asleep, though, knowing me...

I don't think I'd join a fraternity, though, regardless of type - I'd get worried about falling out of it. I was offered one once, and you have to maintain a 3+ GPA... and I hate knowing I practically have an anvil over my head if I happen to slip up.

I had a scholarship that required at least a 3.0 to keep, which is part of why I so often dropped classes. I was in danger of falling below 3.0 my first semester, even.

That's the type of frat I'm joining now. I don't worry too much about dropping below that limit; the cutoff for staying in the honor's program is 3.5. Below that, you get put on probation, and if you drop below 3.25, you're auto-kicked from the program

There was another activity tonight; karaoke. I met some of the other people who were rushing and, well, I think that they would probably fit better in a social fraternity. Maybe it was because they were nervous meeting others, but they seemed kinda... ditzy. I probably need to give them more time before making such judgments, though.

Tomorrow night is roller skating. I'm mentally preparing for massive falling and bruising

Ugh, I never really liked the idea of probation. Well, I can understand the effectiveness of it, but I hate thinking that it could be used against me.

Because then I'd feel less motivated to do good. Or feel very terrible about myself because of my cocksuck self-esteem issues. tl;dr, I only have "decent" self-esteem when I get external praise, but can't create internal praise because, derp, ego issues.

I SURE LOVE BEING PSYCHOLOGICALLY UNSOUND.

Probation's also a dumb idea because you'd think the universities would want to keep their students in as long as possible (unless they bomb everything) to collect the precious tuition fees.

Bad grades mean the college looks bad, loses potential students, can not charge as much because they are seen as less prestigious, and might lose their accreditation, which means NO ONE will want to go there.
Also, if you don't go to class you are just wasting everyone's time, and contrary to popular belief, schools are NOT just in it for the money.

Which means I'd already be fucked because OooOoOHhHhHh NoOoOoOoOoOo I have a 3.21.

Eh. No plans to join a fraternity of any type anyway, like I said, so as long as I keep myself doing somewhat decently...

(I never understood how people can kick themselves for getting a B. Hell, it even angers me.)

Oddly enough, getting As have never been easier for me. :|

College, I swear. (Okay maybe it's because I'm in a community college and therefore full of more derps than the average college. And even then I question the relative ease of getting As in those colleges)
