That's stupid.

I paid for the right to listen to my music however I please, so I should be able to copy it and put it on MP3 players or whatever.

So if I repeatedly rip the same song from the same CD 50 times, is that like stealing 50 CDs?

Will the idiocy of Sony ever cease? (Hint: The answer is "no".)

Technically if you live in the US and the CD employs any sort of copy protection, you're already breaking the law by copying it. Go DMCA.

Besides... Some forms of copy protection on an audio CD violate the Red Book standard, and such discs aren't supposed to feature that one logo.

I usually don't buy either CDs or downloadable songs. How many SPC or NSF sets are on iTunes? Thought so.

Well, isn't this what Nintendo has said about video games for years?

Difference is that you shouldn't be playing games on a system that isn't what it was meant for.

Copying music is normaly meant for play on computer (i.e: when playing games) or MP3 players (which are widely sold).

CDs are designed for playing on a CD player, not an MP3 Player... is that really so different than dumping a NES video games data for use on say, a PSP or something?

The difference is that Nintendo is also wrong, but consider... how many people can (LEGALLY) dump their own ROMs? Not many. Distributing copies is legal; making a backup ROM dump and doing whatever with it is perfectly legal as long as it isn't distributed.

Nintendo, however, would like you to believe all emulators are completely illegal, so that their precious Virtual Console/billions of remakes aren't tossed out.

Oh, I know that Nintendo's position regarding video game copying is a load of crap... it just felt like a relevant comparison to make

Most of the reason that Nintendo doesn't get any crap is because a) they're basically right in that most ROMs people are using are downloaded illegally, and b) nobody really cares. Emulationists are probably <0.1% of the internet population, and I dare say that people who copy music off a CD probably compose about 25% or more...

Naturally, anything that upsets the waters for the large group is going to result in a mess.
