I'm considering doing a major overhaul of my pre-built computer.
The overhaul would consist of me using the same motherboard and DVD drive.
I would be swapping out 160GB OS drive for a 320GB with windows XP.
I would also have to add PCI card to support 4 more SATA ports.
I would be using a 500GB for music and a 750GB for movies , that I already own..
I would also have to get a new case.
Basic Spects are:
1.6 Ghz dual core intel atom 230
2 GB DDR2
does any one think it this is is worth overhauling or not.

More in depth specs are at this link:http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=EL1600-01

I see.

Well, you might be able to make it work. However, you may not have a free PCI slot or a powerful enough power supply.

You'd be better off building a new computer instead.

I getting a case with a power supply because my current power supply would not work in most cases. and i have a free PCI slot by removing the modem.

Are you sure that's a PCI slot? I've seen a lot of motherboards with special modem-only slots.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Hmm, unusual that the modem would be in a full size PCI slot and not in one of those weird tiny modem slots. Kinda unusual that a reasonably modern computer would come with a modem as a separate PCI card at all. Or is Core Atom really that old?

Not unusual at all, every modem I've encountered plugs into a PCI slot.

Indeed, I even had an eMachine with a modem plugged into a PCI slot.

Also, eMachine does really cheap things with their computers, so using that old configuration isn't a surprise.

Me, I'm more surprised that a modern computer comes with a dialup modem at all This one, bought last month, doesn't have one.

I don't even have any PS/2 ports on this computer... however, there seems to be serial and parallel ports on the motherboard (maybe I can get a serial/parallel plate or something? They seem to be a different shape from a normal serial or parallel port)

For ten dollars more, you could get a motherboard with that many SATA ports.

You really should consider building a new computer.

If you already own a retail copy of Windows and it isn't installed on a computer, Microsoft will gladly help you get it working on a new computer.

If you're planning on reinstalling the copy of Windows that came with your nonportable netbook, I'd like to remind you that it checks your hardware and won't work if your upgraded machine is too different from the original. (Plus, it might use a special hidden partition on the 160GB drive. If it does, you can't swap it out and still have a working computer.)

If eMachines are like back the way they were in 1999, it will only check your motherboard, which is exactly why he is not replacing it.

My only question is: Why SATA? Why not get an uber cheap IDE? The extra speed of SATA probably won't be felt with such an anemic computer anyway.

Well, I guess you shouldn't waste those then.

Your situation is unusual, but you seem to know what you're doing. Carry on.

Other people: His machine is weird and, like most eMachines, doesn't work like other computers would. He cannot update the motherboard without buying a new OS due to how eMachines pre-done OSes work; he is buying SATA card because he already has all these hard drives just laying around. Now he could upgrade to a new computer, but... as he just said, that'd cost even more.

I figure it's an old thing they've been used to doing since my ancient eMachine 366i2. They aren't likely to change it because many of the people who buy their computers don't get that sort of thing--they don't figure how to reuse it.

Well, that, and they want you to keep using their motherboard, but hard drives sort of come and go. We replaced the HDD in the old 366i2 for similar reasons to what you did, for example.
