...is confusing when you're only just reading it and have no idea what [ɛə] is supposed to sound like, let alone how single words are supposed to sound like as bonafide official American English.

In short I somehow ended up reading this, got a headache, then watched this and then I had some understanding.

I don't say block as black or bus as boss, though. I hear things like this in the 'preps' a lot, though. :I

Spun off of probably the third conversation about pronunciation I had with Auxiliatrix.

I know quite a bit about how to read the IPA - but I don't think I'm 100% accurate even with vowels you find in English, as Spanish is my first language and we only have 5 vowels there.

The fact that English stuffs so many vowel sounds into 5 (6 if you count the y) vowel letters is what makes it so hard to reform English spelling.

I linguistics.

If anything though that third vowel shift applies to me. Dawn is like yawn, and ecetera.

Also, CAR-mel, OR-inj (with the i almost cut off so it's like a syllable and a half or something), OW-wl, and probably a lot more once I can think of them.

I pronounce Don the same as Dawn, and Mary the same as both merry and marry. I was rather surprised to learn that a lot of people distinguish those words

Also, I tend to say words as 2 syllables instead of one, when it's some diphthongal vowels followed by L or R. Like, "fair" is just 1 syllable to me, but "fail" is 2, and both "wire" and "while" are 2 syllables for me.

I'm from a peculiar region of California that has almost no accent. Occasionally I may clip syllables off of words or something, but not much else.

Paulguy's Post configuration
My pronunciation isn't anything special. It's pretty flat and definite, other than dropping syllables when it's moe convenient.

/faɪə(ɹ/
fire. one syllable.

I hate this word with a burning passion for that.

I've studied the IPA a bit and I can honestly say it gets to points where it's too open to interpretation in some places and some people say things a little bit differently.

Then again, I was using it to do things in a poetic sense, so that's probably why.

Now try reading up on the different British accents and their pronunciations.

Oh dear God no, Peardian. I'm done learning about this for a while, unless it comes up in grad school. XD

Dividing words into syllables is perhaps the most challenging thing English has to offer, in my opinion. For example, the IPA for onomatopoeia tells me it only has 3 syllables, and it's divided " ono-mato-poeia".

Schwas have ruined English, syllable division is so straightforward in many other languages

Those IPA stress symbols are not syllable separators; onomatopoeia has six syllables. Written in IPA, it's /ˌɑːnəˌmɑːtəˈpiə/ which separates into /ˌɑː - nə - ˌmɑː - tə - ˈpi - ə/ in my dialect of English. (I'm fairly certain it's six syllables in other dialects, but I am not a linguist.)
