I was too busy working and keeping up with my new layout that I completely forgot about the announcement today.

Verizon iPhone 4

After talking up his new LTE network a bit, Verizon CEO Lowell Mcadam confirmed a CDMA (non-LTE) version of the iPhone 4 is coming to Verizon Wireless next month. Talks started way back in 2008, and the phone has been in testing for a year -- it sounds like they wanted to get this one right. Current Verizon customers will be able to pre-order on Feburary 3rd for the standard $200 price for the 16GB model on a two year agreement, $300 for the 32GB version -- everyone else can order on February 10th.

Not much in the way of changes. Its still an iPhone 4. Antenna is slightly different since its CDMA. It gains wifi hotspot capabilities but on Verizon's network you can't call and use data at the same time unless on Wifi.

More details here and a good point as to why you don't need to buy one.

Edit: AT&T had a few words about the press release today. Sounds like they're trying to convince themselves they'll do fine without the iPhone exclusivity rather than convince everyone else.

I found it interesting that they decided not to make it a "world phone" with a GSM radio for international roaming, like a lot of VZW's other smartphones are. I guess they figure people will buy it anyway, and international roaming is a ripoff anyway...

(Joke about the benefits of no longer having 100% of the iTards on AT&T)

Maybe the decreased stress on AT&T's service will improve signal quality.

I guess Verizon wants New Yorkers to be as happy as they can be with their new iPhone when it ships. They opened 16 new cell sites there alone. New York and other urban jungles are the worst for signal from all the buildings. Chicago is another one.

Well, Verizon is going to be in a precarious position for a little bit- some blogger gets a single dropped call and it will be quickly shouted across the internet that VZW is just as bad as at&t.

Nobody should really be surprised by that anymore.

Also, I wonder if the VZW iPhones will come with that really awful default VZW ringtone built in. That'd be interesting.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Not as obnoxious as the at&t ringtone.

Also, dropped calls are nothing new on any carrier. I think the issues would be more related to wireless speed. To be honest, I don't mind the speed I get on 3G now. I'd certainly choose true unlimited data over stuff like several 100KB/s speeds if the faster speeds are choking the network, prompting the limitations. Unfortunately, unlimited access and net neutrakity aren't as marketable as bgger, better, faster, etc.

People need to realize that dropped calls have been around ever since the first analog cell phones, and they'll never go away

Anyone know when AT&T or Sprint will get the Droid? I tend to prefer Android-based phones over iPhones

at&t and Sprint do have Android-based phones, but not the Droid itself- IIRC Verizon paid LucasArts directly for the rights to the name "Droid" on cell-phones.

I actually can't remember the last time I've had a dropped call... (I'm on VZW) But I don't call people very often.

Yeah, and New York is home to the worlds largest population of bloggers. I'm sure people will be complaining about it in no time as everyone has pointed out that dropped calls are common to every network.
