I thought it was that some of the Moblins don't want to fight for Ganon (maybe Ganon captured/enslaved/hypnotized some of them?) so they hid in mountains and under trees. Then, they bribe Link to not tell Ganon where they're hiding, or they know that Link is trying to fight against Ganon so they try to help him along.

I used to think the money itself was the secret, rather than the idea that he was bribing you to keep a secret... I suppose the proto definitively puts that theory to rest, though.

Then Link gets greedy and looks for more caves in the Second Quest.

Most of the time he needs to pay for repairs due to his actions.
