Interesting.

I found Ulm's street layout confusing as fuck. Some areas are vaguely sort of grid-based at odd angles, but in most of the city they seem to lay out streets at random, and they often change names a lot. Plus, the addresses are just by street rather than following a citywide system like I'm used to.

I'm confused by what you mean by addresses... Aren't most addresses in the US also street-based?

Ah, maybe not in Boston

In most of the USA, addresses are based on a grid. Like here in Seattle every 1/16th of a mile (usually) is a "block" and there will be a street. Each block has 100 addresses. So you could have, say, 100, 104, 110, 116, 118, 122 and then a cross street. The next address would be something like 200, not something like 130; i.e., it doesn't just pick up where it leaves off, it starts a new group of 100. Evens and odds are on opposite sides (which is also true in Germany AFAIK).

In Seattle and other cities, some of the streets are numbered accordingly. I live just off of 13th Avenue on a cross street, so my address is in the 1300s. Go another block east and you have 14th Avenue and the numbers are in the 1400s for that block, etc. Thing is, even if a street starts at, say, 23rd Avenue, the addresses still follow the grid and start around 2300 rather than at 1 or 100.

German streets just start every street with 1 and 2 usually, so knowing one street's addresses doesn't tell you what a parallel street's addresses are, necessarily.

Ah, I see... I never realized there was logic to those kinds of grid numbering systems. Where I live and in most places I've seen around here it's just sequential because cross streets do not predictably stay cross streets... there are parts of Boston that are on a grid, but I haven't navigated those areas enough to tell whether they use that kind of building numbering.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I'm not sure if this neighborhood has anything like that but we leave the trash cans by the front porch and never got crap for it. Also, there are some bizarrely ugly houses around... they're all different since they're about 100 years old.

Also, the older streets around here are a bit funky, then newer than that, go to grid, except in some areas where they tried to cram as many houses in and ended up with basically scribbles all over with tons of cul de sacs and dead ends. Baby boomer era stuff, where population rose dramatically. Nowadays they try to be artsy fartsy and have weird layouts, that're hard to follow.

The addresses work the exact same way Terra described in Philadelphia and Washington. I think it's very convenient if you only have a house number for an address, because then you can still tell what street it's on (at least east/west or north/south)

We don't have street names around the area where my parents live ... We use postal addresses

(I had to pay into some insurance that would pay out should something like that ever happen. She let it expire, and took the money for herself.)

Our stuff went down yesterday.

As for the malls... no such luck. :\ Odds are they'll keep it going until Ukrainian Christmas and then take everything down.

We have a grid system here (whee, flatlands). Building numbers are 5 digits and then a street/avenue. Streets go one direction, avenues go the other (can't remember which, doesn't really matter). So an example address would be 12345 104 st, which means go to 104 st, head for the intersection with 123 ave, and it'll be the 45th building past that. Very convenient, since you can find any place just by its address without having to know where anything else is.

HOAs are those organizations that restrict what you can do with your house so that they all look the same and the neighbourhood looks boring, right? Like in those McMansion developments

Ack, I hate those! If I already bought the house, why must I be regulated on the way I decorate it??

I hate bland neighborhoods where every house looks identical to the next one.
HOAs: Because having a landlord wasn't annoying enough back when you lived in an apartment!

(I still need to make a new layout to replace this Christmas one too... )

Well I have finally gotten rid of my Christmas avatar after being way to lazy to create another one
What do you guys think?
(I can imagine the underwater song from Banjo Tooie coming from my newest avatar)

Post layouts are also part of this HOA requirement. You are now in violation of it and will be fined $1000, please make checks payable to Orlandu.

Hm, it's neat, but BMP is a little big... (though, I guess in this modern world 29KB is not too much)

I replaced my avatar with nothing. (Though I brought back the custom title, so maybe that counts)

The HOA here does nothing. Bums sleep on our porches while the outside is like Dark Aether, and cable companies can't get their cables into the houses properly as the only cable usable is from 10 years ago and very far from a repeater. X_X
