Indeed.

So much for becoming the next big thing. I'm waiting for this to happen to Facebook in the next 5-10 years too, at this rate.

Facebook hasn't been going downhill yet like Myspace has. They've nearly peaked but I think FB is still growing somewhat. I expect Myspace to be gone in 2 years.

Myspace went down a lot faster than I expected. I thought they'd be the next Geocities. Instead, they seem to be imploding. It's... weird.

I wonder if social networking will have another kind of dot com bust, and a lot of crappy sites end up falling, and people go back to their lives and stop adding social networking features to every damn thing. It's fine in a few things, like Steam, and Facebook wouldn't be so bad if they got rid of most of the crap they have, and leave the interface the fuck alone. Get it right once, and stop touching it. And keep it simple and organized. Right now it's a mess and there are no borders to really distinguish stuff. It's all just thrown all over with random bits and pieces here and there. Ugh, unusable.

MySpace had 1,100 employees? I mean, I don't know all the requirements of operating a major social network, but I have to say that kind of seems like a lot...

Well, at one point, it pretty much had most of the people who are on Facebook now on it.

Despite that Geocities had gotten a really bad rap, it wasn't a terrible way to get a website started. My site started out on Geocities (mostly as an in-joke that got way out of control, but, that's another story).

The problem seemed to be a combination of bad decisions combined with the company just not giving a crap about keeping up with the times. Very few updates to the service were ever made, except when they wanted you to start paying to have the same thing as before.

The biggest turn off for most people I know who were using Geocities was when they started deleting accounts if their sites weren't updated in a few months. Some people might go away for a while, or just go awhile without updating - they didn't like thinking their sites would get deleted if they just took a break or had no internet access for some time. Also, if you were to build a shrine for a specific game, you might eventually run out of material for it, but would still want it to be around so that future visitors could use it as a resource. I rarely update my completed game shrines, for example, because there's no need to.

I also don't get how deleting accounts was good for Geocities. How does something like Geocities earn money (besides the paid-for services)? From ads. How do people see the ads? By surfing the sites that display them. How can people see ads on sites that don't exist? ... ?

Take for example, I should search "Secret of Mana", and someone's old Secret of Mana page on Geocities turns up. I would probably visit that page and would see the ads. But if that Secret of Mana page is deleted, well, it's not going to turn up in any search results, and I'll go to someone else's site instead, so there is now 0% chance that Geocities would earn any money from me.

--

The only popular modern internet social service I get any use out of is YouTube. I have a website and a message board for all my other needs. But YouTube was the only service that offered the ability to do something I couldn't do before.

Yahoo paid way more for GeoCities than Fox paid for MySpace... (though the .com boom had a lot to do with that)

That's not really my experience- nobody I knew had a MySpace (except for my younger sister, who is one of those social-networking crazy people), but it seems like everyone I know IRL is on Facebook.

From what I can tell, people I know IRL tend to use nothing but Facebook and possibly Twitter. No boards, no IRC, no AIM.

Yeah- it seems like for a lot of people today, Facebook is the internet. (Well, that and email)

MySpace likely to be spun off or sold

Further evidence of MySpace imploding into nothing!

Facebook is an independent company! Therefore, if MySpace is spun out and becomes independent, they'll be just like Facebook and everyone will start using it again! It's only logical.

Good all we will all need is investors, to buy it and fix it up into the next Facebook.
