	I'll be getting them, since I already have 3 VHS box sets of the originals and 2 DVD sets of the new ones (including a special edition VHS of Episode 1). But I doubt we'll see that much of a quality increase over the DVD's upconverted to 1080p. There won't be any degradation of the video to compress it for DVD size, but for the average consumer they won't see a difference from the DVD to the Bluray. I like the extra features and behind the scenes news, though. Edit: The die-hard originals fans will be upset about this one. I know a lot of people prefer the non-Special Edition versions. While the "highest picture and audio quality" and extensive special features are promised, what won't make it to Blu-ray are the original versions of the movies; Lucas told the New York Times that only the special editions will be included, since restoring the original versions in high enough quality would cost too much. Spoiler alert! Yeah the new special features seem all right, but I just which he would use the original theatrical versions instead of the special editions. The originals have effects that characterize the movie, the whole idea that all of those creatures, those vehicles, the entire world Lucas created, were all actual physical things that were created to perform in front of the camera is a brilliant testament to the art of film making. But now you can just CG over some explosions and add in some droids in Mos Eisley and it's all still the same, right? It just looks synthetic. But hell this thread is about the blu-rays. So I guess I'll give them a look, but I probably won't rush out to buy them when they hit stores. I all ready have the original unaltered trilogy on VHS, the special editions, and all of the DVDs. So it's just another update for me.

Also, those people really over-reacted to seeing Luke start up a lightsaber.

There are HD, at least 720p versions of Star Wars, so there will be a quality difference from DVD to blu-ray. I have the HD rips on my computer someone recorded off TV and they look quite good. They are of course the special editions.

These do look better, but they're not true 720p. The benefit of them coming to bluray is that they don't have to compress them to find on a DVD and can be in a lossless format from the ample space on a bluray disc. So yes, the quality will be better than watching a DVD. But it won't be like modern movies that were actually filmed in HD. ____________________

Blu-ray cannot be lossless. In fact, lossless 720p video would require approximately 16 times the capacity of a dual-layer BD (and be incompatible with Blu-ray players).

We'll have a lossless video format on Holographic discs by 2020. 10TB discs (and that number is probably going to increase by a lot by the time the format rolls out)

Guess I meant less loss from compression. Blu-rays allow for much higher qualities and require less compression. ____________________

Honestly, I don't mind remastering or anything but the touching up of the movies that GL keeps doing is... sort of stupid. Adding a scene where Luke is making a Lightsaber? Not so bad. Completely removing actors from the original movies? That's a bit absurd, man.

Oh, but I'll still be buying the ORIGINAL trilogy. That's right, I said it. :smug:

All six films of the Star Wars series were shot in an aspect ratio of 2.40:1. The original trilogy was shot with anamorphic lenses. Episodes IV and V were shot in Panavision, while Episode VI was shot in Joe Dunton Camera (JDC) scope. Episode I was shot with Hawk anamorphic lenses on Arriflex cameras, and Episodes II and III were shot with Sony's CineAlta high-definition digital cameras.

So in English, episodes II and III were recorded and broadcast in HD.
Episodes IV, V, VI and I were recorded 35 mm film which makes them very easy to covert to HD.

	Good point, Pyra. When I think about upconverting even the DVD releases just for the sake of putting it on Blu-ray, it gives me the shivers. But going back to the original film reels and converting to digital at HD resolution would produce much better results, but what about all the changes made for the Special Edition and DVD packs? I'm sure there is film for the original Special Edition releases since digital wasn't very prominent when they were released. The only thing they would have to rework is what was changed in the DVD version. ____________________
