So, tonight, I finally finished something I literally started when I was seven years old: I finally, *finally* beat the second quest on the Legend of Zelda! All right, it was on the GameCube "Zelda Collection", and not the *actual* NES cart, but same difference. My gods, what a piece of work that is... if it weren't for the internet... I mean, sheesh, all those tricks in the second quest, like false walls and using the whistle to open passages... you never needed those in the first quest, and they're never alluded to *at all* in-game. Little wonder my seven-year-old self could never find any dungeons past the second one...

Still. I consider this a triumph. 20 years. And finally, I did it. ...now I'm going to bed.

Yeah, the second quest is rather tough.



If you think that's hard, try Outlands. I beat the first quest, now I'm stuck in the second. I think maybe I need the bracelet glove, and I have no idea where it is. And I'm not even sure if that's what I need.

You needed the whistle to open up Level 7 in the first quest.

The fake wall in Level 2 absolutely killed me when I was younger. I was stuck on that for MONTHS until there just happened to be an issue of Nintendo Power stating that there was a walk-through wall. It was smooth sailing after that.

I never actually tried to beat he second quest I liked the game a lot, I'm not sure why I didn't.

I've beaten every other Zelda game except for the DS ones and Adventure of Link (omg that one was insane!)

I watched my dad beat it two years ago on my NES.

He used a walkthrough for just about all of it.

Yep, we had the NES Game Atlas before we had Zelda I

In fact, its existence in the NES Game Atlas was what prompted us to buy it.

Yeah, that one was tricky... but there was an oblique clue ("THERE ARE SECRETS WHERE FAIRIES DON'T LIVE"), and that lake *was* suspicious... Not that anyone would've thought blowing the whistle would be the key... Still, it was infamous enough that you could probably have gotten the solution by just asking other kids at school (which is how I found out); odds are, at least *one* of them knew about it.

Some of the other passages opened by the whistle in the second quest, though... no lake or anything (because of that, finding level 3 in the second quest was trivial... if you could find the damned whistle in the first place), you just blow the whistle on a random screen, and a staircase appears out of nowhere. Two heart containers were hidden that way, as well as level 6. Yeesh. Given the obscurity and difficulty, it was far less likely to find someone as a kid who even *knew* about the second quest, much less any of its oddities...

Don't forget one-way doors in the second quest.

The NES Game Atlas has some of the best walkthroughs/maps I've seen.

I remember most of the NES Game Atlas maps obviously being bunches of screenshots next to each other, but the SMB3 maps looked hand-drawn. I wonder why they didn't take screenies for SMB3.

They were screenshots but they were generally well done *AND* the legends were easy to understand so you weren't wondering how to get into a certain room.

The SMB3 ones were very likely taken from the SMB3 Player's Guide released a year before the Game Atlas.

I can't imagine how anyone could beat the second quest without an FAQ. That shit is crazy, but so satisfying when you beat it.

I beat it over the course of a year when I was like 7 or 8. No internet help, but like three of my friends had beaten it before me, so they gave me tips.

I beat the second quest blind last June.

Needless to say, it was painful for pretty much all of the reasons YK mentioned. Seriously, I accidentally found half the levels after walking around the overworld for an eternity. I was smart enough to figure out quite a few of the things in the quest (experience with Zelda Classic sort of helped there), but a lot of it was nearly impossible to purposefully figure out.

Zelda 2 is just as painful, but for different reasons. Most of what's hard about Zelda 1 is its cryptic nature--there are a few cryptic things in Z2, but for the most part, the difficulty in that game comes from the combat. I also beat Zelda 2 mostly blind, although I used a walkthrough for a couple of parts.

Well, yeah, I've actually gotten through most of the game before, but never finished. What annoys me about levelling up is that if you get a game over, you lose all your experience. That, and the game just *loves* throwing minor, easily-killed, yet near impossible to avoid, enemies that actually cause you to *lose* experience if you get hit by them.

Yeah, I remember stumbling through the Grand Palace as a kid, somehow making it to the end, defeating the Thunderbird... and then the game glitched, Dark Link never appeared, and... I couldn't finish. I never felt like trying again after that...

The Japanese version doesn't do that.

It makes me wonder why they made it harder outside of Japan. You need more EXP to gain levels in the English version, too.

I actually never beat zelda one until recently. I have of course known about the second quest before I even tried the game, and I have given it several tries both before and after beating the first quest... but I just find the combat so stiff in zelda one that I don't feel like it... and figuring out some of the stuff is just... ugh! V_v

I think I couldn't find the entrance to the 8th temple so I quit, in Zelda II. The game was too insane, anyway, no matter how much I cheated.
