What do they accept? Leaves?

Credit cards.

Yes, you read right.

...

Calling cards and prepaid cards I can see. And some phones here do have a credit card option.

But credit cards only... oh boy.

I remember having a hard time getting my American debit card accepted in Germany, even for huge purchases. Do Germans routinely pay hundreds of euro in cash, or do merchants only accept German or European debit cards?

Usually I'd just go to the cash machine and get some euro. Then, I'd get huge amounts of fees from my American bank

Yes. It is usually very hard to get your foreign card accepted in Germany. Many only accept German cards. I know someone who works in Switzerland and has an account at a Swiss bank, but cannot pay with his Swiss credit card in Germany at all, requiring him to drive to Switzerland every time (= customs check, sigh). Many Swiss ATMs near the border have the option of printing euros for this reason.

Interesting, I'll keep those things in mind for when I go to Germany. I have a tendency not to carry any money with me besides my debit card.

I'll keep this in mind if I ever head off to Europe sometime like I really, really want to do someday.

Though I don't know how bad it would be if, say, I'm trying to pay for things in England with an American credit card, but I'm kind of expecting the same hassle now.

Credit cards are different since you have the whole Visa/MasterCard thing; however, you can get screwed over if you have a Visa and the store only accepts MC or vice-versa.

99% of places here in America accept Visa and Mastercard as a standard. American Express is somewhat less common and Discover is the least accepted card. I had heard that Discover got a bad rep with always siding with the customer on disputed charges so stores stopped taking them. Not sure if thats true to this day though.

America's great with Visa/MC as 99.999% of all stores take both.

Go to certain areas of Europe, however... :\

I remember a sign at the Washington State Department of Licensing office in Seattle that mentioned that they don't take Visa specifically. I wonder why.

Considering I almost never carry cash with me ... I wouldn't be able to buy anything at a place that doesn't take debit/credit cards.

I used to be reluctant and suspicious with credit cards, but now I use one all the time.

I think it's really more because of how everything is "OMG CREDIT SCORE" than anything. Yeah, I feel like a buffoon for falling into the trap of how important credit is.

Just be very, very careful to pay everything off every month. The last thing you need is to fall into some debt spiral.

Trust me, I do. The only time I didn't pay off the full balance one month was because PayPal was supposed to refund me $4 for being a douchebag and blocking my account to test security measures while I was out at Otakon. Fuckers never did refund me.

Mom's like that too every time I come home from being away for a while. She did tell me I was "disappearing" when I came back from PA for Winter Break. But apparently, I've been overdoing it with the eating?

Eh, I don't look any chubbier at all. Besides, I'm going back to my peanut butter diet once I'm alone again in the USA (unless I get a job already!! )

I wouldn't mind packing on a few pounds since I'm skinny...

(Then again, I'm happy with how I am anyways.)

My general rule is that if you can see your feet past our belly when standing up, you should be ok. If not, then yeah, you can stand to lose a few pounds, but as long as you do not mind being that heavy, and it does not cause any problems for you or anyone else, then sure, no problem.
