Good luck, FieryIce! I've been trying to learn Japanese, and the kanji are one of the things I've found hardest... and Chinese has no phonetic characters to fall back on...

Are you planning to try to learn the simplified or traditional characters?

Thanks guys! So far I haven't really had much trouble learning the Hanzi or anything, really. One of my new year's resolutions is to become conversational in Mandarin Chinese before the end of the year (and I really think I can)

I'm learning the simplified characters. Once I do master Chinese (or get very very good at it at least) I do plan to learn the traditional ones, too. There's a very high chance I'll learn Japanese if I'm successful with Mandarin

So far I can say and write a few things and I know about 50 Hanzi.

I cannot count the number of online friends I have, but I could count the number of IRL friends I have, and even more easily count the number I actually hang out with IRL on a regular basis.

Yes, zero. Though, (mostly) online friends I call sometimes to hang out is a good number. You could even argue my boyfriend is an "online boyfriend" since we only see each other about once a month. We've learned to make the most of our time together, that way, though.

I buy my textbooks online and save a lot ... My German textbook costs 120 at the local bookstore, yet, I found it for 5 online (after much digging).
