Ahhh, okay. Funny, all these SMW hacking references are making me want to finish a hack I started with my sister about half a year ago and only had one level left to be made

I know! But ... I'd been making levels get progressively longer and harder ... it's the very last one so it was supposed to be quite long (though, not really very difficult, more like easy to get lost) so I got lazy

I really really should finish it, though ... It has no special gimmicks but hey, it doesn't suck! xD

Clearly, you should use MSU-1 to have some fancy waveform/pcm-based music, so that people at SMWCentral go nuts because 'Expansion chips are cheating OMGZ'. :p

as an actual music hacker, I will have to at least agree that having externally streamed music files IS kind of cheating especially since it isn't THAT hard to write music for the basic Nintendo spc engine in hex (and I don't mean using addmusic)

Hasn't nearly every cartridge-based Nintendo system had that capability and not used it? Famicom did (but not NES), Game Boy did, N64 did... I don't think GBA and later handhelds did due to lack of cartridge pins though.

Perhaps, but I don't see the real difference. The function is supported by the SNES if the cartridge has the right hardware in it, and if we wanted to pretend it was ye olden days, we could still compress the music down really far.

Or use a CD-based addon as was planned--and had the SNES-CD been made, you wouldn't see people accusing Nintendo themselves of cheating, would you?

That said, the SNES music engine is very robust, so the main use of waveforms would be to make music with A. higher quality instruments than the SNES has or B. radically different instrumentation/distortion behavior the SNES couldn't do.

Outputs from the cartridge into the sound system? Other way around wouldn't make much sense...

Do those need to be enabled somehow, or are they always on? Been meaning to play with that...

Outputs from the sound system to the cartridge. There's also one pin that's a video output on some development or reviewer consoles, but it's not present on retail units.

It's really frustrating knowing that this thing exists but not being able to find it.

Why not use the GB transfer pack on the back of the controller [N64] as a method to get the music? I mean, there is GBA/GB flashcarts with microsd... (I think )

I'm... not entirely sure what you're saying, but it would take ridiculous effort to stream audio data through a controller. You'd be better off hooking up a S/PDIF adapter in place of the audio DAC. (Did you know that there are S/PDIF encoders that accept the input directly from the RCP?)
