"A horrible person". That's what it says. "A horrible person."

We weren't even testing for that.

Most instruction books for TVs tell you that your TV may not work if you place it in the wrong location, and in this case you must move it to a different location. It says the reason for this is the magnetic field of the earth, but I wonder - has this ever happened to anybody? It seems strange that a TV would not start up because it's at the wrong location...

I've never had a warning like that. More often it warns about radio interference or fields from nearby devices. And I would know because I tend to read TV manuals cover to cover.

I distinctly remember a CRT computer monitor stating in the manual it had been calibrated to work properly facing a certain direction thanks to the earth's magnetic fields. Facing the wrong direction would affect the magnetic alignment and cause colors to shift.

Actually, all CRTs are built and calibrated to work in particular locations facing certain directions, and will have color shifts or other odd things if they're used differently.

Of course none of that entirely stops the TV from working...

Huh... this explains the weird color issues I keep having with my CRT TV from time to time. I always thought the TV was just broken or something. :o

Not necessarily. I had one TV with a shadow mask that would warp when it heated up. If a steady, bright pattern was on screen for a long time, it would cause severe discoloration; darkening the screen allowed it to cool off and return to normal. (This TV was used for nothing but video games, so steady patterns were quite common. I remember it being annoying whenever I left Animal Crossing paused for a few minutes.)

I've never actually even heard of this phenomenon. This is news for me. I've always managed to get it working no matter what direction it faces.

I never knew of this phenomenon, as I would instead smack the TV until it worked again if it tried this on me.

I've never heard of that, either. I guess all of our TVs happened to be in the correct locations and orientations.

I've never even heard of that. However, the only manuals I read are game manuals, which I find strangely interesting.

I do too, Zero One.

Back in the old days, they were handy ways to learn various things about playing the game

I do that too... in fact, I have a bunch of game manuals here for games I don't even have... (Like, the NES version of Tetris)

I'm thinking this being the one thing being the issue with a cousin's TV when he was playing GTA III on his bedroom TV that one Thanksgiving. It'd always go back to normal when smacked.

That's because the effects are usually minor. Most CRTs are designed to minimize the effects of external magnetic fields. (And have built-in degaussing coils.)

Smacking the TV won't fix magnetic interference, and can even damage some types of CRTs. The only thing that might fix is loose connections, which are a lot more obvious than the earth's magnetic field.

You'd be surprised how often giving something a good smack gets it working... not sure how that works, but I've seen it more than a few times. (Don't try it on things with moving parts mind you... ) When I was a child we had this big old CRT, which interestingly was old enough not to have a remote control, yet had an LED display and number pad for channel selection. One day the pad wouldn't work right... we'd enter the two digits and it'd swap them around. I don't remember why we didn't just enter it backward (I think we tried that and that somehow didn't work either) and I really can't imagine what kind of glitch caused that... but we just gave it a good smack and it started working again.

My grandfather has a similar TV, which someone left a very large, strong magnet on top of for a while. It has some colour distortion as a result... the strange thing is the magnet is still there, because if you remove it, the distortion gets worse...

(And just about any time my Nintendo consoles wouldn't start up, I'd give them a good smack and they'd work again... makes me glad we went with Nintendo; I may well have destroyed a few Playstations if we'd had them back then. )

Then again, I've been known to have a "magic touch"... not uncommon that I just touch or even stand near something and it magically stops - or starts - working. I managed to jam an EEG machine without even trying... soon as they put it on my head it just shut right down and wouldn't come back on. Who knows... (It did start up again after a few minutes.) Fixed someone's doorbell one halloween just by pushing the button; apparently it hadn't worked in years, and I just came along and pushed it and hey, it works again!

There was also the days I walked home every night, and every streetlight would go out when I walked under it and come back on when I was far enough away. You could see as I walked, it was like the darkness hopped from one light to the next to follow me... this happened most nights for as long as I lived there...

(and now I'm way off topic! )

Actually, that's what I had originally thought, then this conversation came up and somehow the suggestion... yeah.

In all likelihood, the degaussing coil adjusted it for the magnet. Removing the magnet and using the TV like normal will usually fix it, though there are ways to demagnetize it faster.

I get this too. I somehow managed to kill two perfectly fine computers in trying to set up a server, yet the dead-when-I-got-it computer has been on 24/7 since the last power outage.

This has to be the most fascinating thing I have learned all day. I will have to be sure to read the next manual I get for anything to be sure I do not miss learning something.
