Despite having owned Minecraft for a while, I still really haven't gotten into it.

Played last night and noticed I wasn't able to find any coal before nighttime. Spent the night hiding on top of a tree.

watch out for trees--if you have your graphics set to fast, mobs can spawn on leaf blocks. they can't when you're set on fancy, though...

I've been constructing a giant minecart track, from my first Nether portal and straight west, and I'm not sure where to stop. (It's somehow much more fun to build there, as it's not completely white like my World. All the snow is pretty annoying, and I still haven't found any cactus yet.) The track already takes at least a minute even by riding through boosters and stuff, so it's equivalent out of the Nether must be pretty far. Any suggestions as to when to stop and what to build around the new portal at the other end?

EDIT: Been working on a high up walkway/railway.
