With a twist!
Timeline of events:
Late July: They email me, having seen my resume online, and arrange a phone interview. The same day, they seem impressed by my technical prowess over the phone somehow, so a face interview is arranged. About a week later, I show up to the interview to find three people in front of me. Each one is wearing a cheap polo and a baseball cap backwards. They introduce themselves; each is CEO of a different company. I show them my portfolio and the rest of the time is spent answering asinine questions (What's your favorite football team? A: Spain.). They hire me.
Early August: The job is nothing like what they said it was. I'm abundantly underqualified to actually do it, and though their deadline is in a few months I realistically need to finish before classes start. I bring this up to them and they basically tell me it's okay and do your best.
Mid August: I do my best. I become qualified to do the job and actually do it, turning it in two and a half weeks after getting the job. I keep my confusion about why they gave me three months to myself and expect to quietly pocket a few thousand dollars, then walk away laughing.
Mid September: I have not been paid. I bug the people I know who work for that company and they bug the people who should be writing the checks and everyone admits their mistake and says I should be paid shortly.
Mid October: They clarify that they can only pay me if I give them a formal invoice. They should already have one from when I turned in the code, but okay. I send the invoice, giving them a nice round 30 days to fill it from the day I file it.
Mid October plus 30 days: I ask all three CEOs by email why I have not yet been paid. I receive no response.
Early December: I am too busy with final projects and finals to even care.
Now: Finals are over and I am trying to figure out how the hell to ever get paid.
Any suggestions? |

It's difficult for me to assume it's a scam because a few close friends of mine work there and get paid quite well. They've suggested that it's bureaucratic confusion because actual employees get paid automatically (payroll system, hah. Stable employment has its perks I suppose) whereas as a contractor I need to bug someone to personally write me a check, they can't just enter my invoice into the system and assume I'll be paid (which is what they apparently did.)
Still, if it's an honest mistake they should really be responding to my emails. Going there in person is a good plan but I have to wait for my health to improve a bit and also for snow to abate. |

Here's how to get their attention: Sue.
Don't let 'em fuck with you, it's obvious as to what they're doing. They have no intention of paying you no matter how much you bug them and they're always going to give you lip service.

Read your contract. If they're in breach of the contract, you should be able to take legal advice.
Also, never do any work on promised pay. If something is too good to be true, it usually is. Some people in business are ruthless, and sometime stupid to the point of breaking the law (to their own harm). |
