My current one died. Windows doesn't recognize it and can't find the installation files. I installed it in January. I've restarted, no use.

Size isn't a particular concern (the 500GB one I had before wasn't even half full), reliability and speed are. Need a drive that won't overheat or otherwise shit itself when I'm running programs and playing games from it (my computer's drive is small.)

Well, I'm pretty sure the drive simply overheated. This thing was running warm when the drive wasn't even accessible, just plugged in and not doing anything. To say nothing of how warm it got by the end of some nights.

Which sounds to me like the drive itself is probably damaged, but I'm really not a hardware person. Thing looks like it'll be a bitch to open, though - it's one of these

...I was just going to suggest that exact brand of hard drive. :U

I've had mine for about 2 years at this point with the only hiccups in its operation being human errors that were easily solvable.

In fact all the hard drives I have for this machine are Western Digital. One a 70 GB that's definitely over 6 at this point, a 140GB that is definitely 6, and the aforementioned 300GB MyBook that runs pretty cool, almost at room temperature.

If anything it was probably crappy manufacturing on your particular drive.

Generally I use a Samsung hard drive, one of those new one-platter dealies, I forgot the name, but they're sorta durable.

I dunno, as I never leave it running forever, out of fear that it will overheat and break.

I have a Seagate "FreeAgent" external hard drive that has worked well so far, but I only got it this summer so I can't really vouch for long-term reliability...

I bought a Seagate 500GB external on clearance at Kmart a few months ago... although it's only really used for video storage, software storage, and games, so it rarely gets used (and it never gets unplugged from the computer, either)

I'd just buy a hard drive and get an external enclosure for it. Lets you reuse the enclosure and do whatever with the hard drive.

Yeah, I would also just go for an enclosure + separate hard disk. I wonder, though, maybe a laptop hard disk would be a better option, since they might be a bit more designed for moving around. Given that, I wonder if the price difference would be better or worse or worth it at all?

Can you elaborate on this? I don't mean to sound useless here, but I'd rather admit I don't know shit about hard drives than end up getting something that doesn't work or miss some parts or something.

Any enclosure + any internal HD; I mean something like this where you provide your own (internal) HD.

That way, if the HD goes bad (or you want to move it into the computer, replace it with a larger one, etc) you're free to do so.
