Hmm. I may have to experiment with Hyrule Magic at some point. Hacking LttP is something I want to do.
Super Mario 64
Super Metroid
New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros.
LttP.
God, I have a huge list.

That looks pretty nice, but I've been spoiled by Zelda Classic And I don't even use that anymore since college started.
Shouldn't this be in the rom hacking forum? |

I played around with Zelda Classic before (like, right before) I came to Acmlm's actually... never really released anything, and I don't think any of the quest I was working on survived. I think I discovered Acmlm's and ROM Hacking looking for a Mario equivalent.
As for Hyrule Magic, I remember playing around with it a little, making the game unplayable, and giving up when I couldn't fix it.

I never did finish a quest in Zelda Classic, either... I like playing other people's quests but lately I just haven't had enough time.
I might give it a chance again during Winter Break ... |

 | I'd never give up ZC for LTTP hacking.
ZC's code can be a bit of a mess at times, but it's so much easier and at times more flexible to work with.
I've gotten a few quests out (Quest Through Time , A Link to the Shadows, and Caballo), and I still have one in progress. I really should toy with the 2.5 alphas more than making joke quests, but the whole version stew makes it very hard to take building in one of them seriously.
I still use 1.90 and 1.92b184 for my projects.

I tried Hyrule Magic and it was PAINFUL.
There was just broken rooms and doors everywhere, and game-crashing glitches on things you didn't even touch.
And I don't like how the game itself is coded to be honest...
ZC though is all about getting around the thousand of unfinished features. 2.1 is the most stable in my opinion and it's fun to use.
2.5 on the other hand has an ITEM EDITOR which is the one thing I like doing the most (though it is quite limited), but it's full of random unfinished crap everywhere. (Ugh dialogue. And Zelda 3 overrating...)
But I think the best 2D Zelda engine is the one from the Oracle games (and some things of Link's Awakening).

5075 | I should get around to installing Zelda Classic on here sometime... but please, don't keep remaking Zelda I in ZC, it's been done enough times already
Never tried to make any quests with it, however... although I've used other editors (such as the ones in Jetpack and Boppin', two awesome DOS games )

I remember playing around in the Jetpack editor!
Though the master of classic DOS games with editors is ZZT.

Aside from a couple of the Wolfenstein 3D editors, I always had a hard time figuring out other game editors and they never made a lot of sense to me, unfortunately. It's a shame, I have a lot of ideas for hacks too. =/

You're kidding, right?
I mean outside of
(in 2.10.2)
the merely opening the misc. colors dialog crashing the entire program
being unable to specify a specific quest folder in ZC itself without the program breaking
being unable to edit tiles in any resolution other than the tiny default one
(in 2.10)
constant mouse ghosting
garbage tiles being added to the combo page if you happen to load any quest in 2.10 other than the one you already had open
MIDIs randomly refusing to load/crashing the program/becoming distorted and broken
I suppose it is pretty stable. (There's other stuff I'm forgetting, but those are the most immediately obvious bugs.)
Originally posted by Reimu (Ugh dialogue. And Zelda 3 overrating...)
I don't see how this has anything to do with ZC 2.5 but okay. If you don't like the Zelda 3-esque features (of which there are hardly any, seriously, most of the engine overhauls are more Link's Awakening-esque than anything, not to mention completely optional) you can just not use them.
It'd be nice if the ZC developers would actually, er, finish 2.5, because it's more than promising. It's fairly stable as far as alphas go, except for the occasional alpha they come out with where they break stuff. Ugh. That, and the whole part where you have to dig through over 1000 alphas and you have to upgrade every 3 versions and direct people to specific alphas and people have to keep a bunch stocked up on their computer just to play 2.5 quests...
I've always wanted to make something a little closer to LTTP, 'cause I do like its engine, but... I've never particularly liked messing with Hyrule Magic. It is a headache. Same goes for LA, except I've never even really tried there. |

I think he meant stable in that the average number of minor things that can crash the application (many) has stayed remarkably stable between every update.
