Some fucking cunt decided to bother the bus driver making us five minutes late. (And by that I mean five minutes MORE not in totall.) Making me miss my train, so fucking mad right now! >:|

You know what else is funny? The time table and plan for the buses are that they don't stop on every station, not even every other station. So when the buss every morning stop on every other station we automatically get one to four minutes late! I should not even need to comment on how stupid that is. :/

(Making this post while being very tired and copy pasting my facebook posts. Not a good idea but- sktghsdjtgsdfg)

The timetables here are adjusted for the number of stops the bus will have to take.

The bus in the morning is consistently late, suggesting that they didn't take into account enough stops.

I always stop at a place with multiple different bus lines for this reason.

I haven't had a problem with buses before, and I've traveled a lot by bus and train since I came to the US. Sure, they sometimes arrive a few minutes late (especially the long distance ones like Philly to Washington) but I always plan in advance and go earlier than I have to.

You can't complain about buses until you've tried to catch one in metro Detroit.

I would rely on the bus to get to school when it was too snowy for me to ride my bicycle safely (which was quite a while). The buses run once an hour, so if I miss one, by the time I catch the second one my first class has already ended, and I had to choose between being 5 minutes late for class or 55 minutes early. Bus routes are far apart, and I had to walk half a mile to the bus stop that would take me to school. There was a closer bus, and in a more sane city I could transfer, but with a whole hour between buses that would involve a lot of waiting around. Also, the bus system doesn't cover a lot of the metro area, and a lot of the jobs around Detroit are in the outermost suburbs where you pretty much have to drive. They don't even usually have sidewalks for my bike out there.

Also, most of the routes would stop around 7 in the evening, and my school was fond of offering classes only in the evenings. If it was too snowy for my bike, I had the choice of spending $13 for a cab home or walking home in the dark in a neighbourhood where I was a racial minority in a metro area filled with harsh racism.

On the other hand, buses on some routes tended to be empty or nearly so, so it's easy to find a seat

Here it's totally different, buses usually run every 10-30 minutes until around midnight and there are often multiple buses on a stretch of road (at least near downtown; maybe the outer suburbs are worse).

The bus system in Greater Boston isn't great either- every line has stops on basically every intersection, so in the more populated areas it's stop, one person gets on, go a block, stop, two people get on, go a few more feet, more people get on... (and since I lived at the end of the line, I didn't even really benefit from this) And they used "low-floor" buses, which were more handicapped accessible (admittedly this is a good thing) but also were extremely rattly and you felt every bump in the road.

On the plus side, at least when I rode the bus regularly I was usually transferring to the subway, so if I missed my usual train the next one wasn't far behind...

Here they did the great thing of putting a bus stop in front of traffic lights.

You can guess how it goes: bus comes, stops to pick up passengers, traffic lights turn red, bus continues stopping, more passengers want to get in and eventually, after an insanely long amount of time, the bus continues, only to stop at the next traffic light just one road ahead.

Good job, I must say.

That's horrible, Terra, here we get buses every 20 minutes or so, and if I'm going to Philly and miss the bus by just one or two minutes, I can run around town and catch it on the other side because it makes a ton of stops before it actually leaves town to Philly.

The train in Philly passes by the bus stop every 10~ minutes so yeah ... I'm taking a plane to PR next Sunday and I'm making it to the airport by bus/train. I wish we had a good bus/train system in Puerto Rico.

Yeah, in Detroit they want to make everyone buy a car to support the local auto industry (i.e., most of the economy of the area).

I was rather amazed at Seattle buses coming every 10-15 minutes during peak times and every half-hour well into the night when I moved here.

Ahh yeah, I figured not too many people used public transportation in Detroit. I don't think anyone uses public transportation in Puerto Rico ... it's HORRIBLE ... it works completely different to what I've experienced (and come to love) here in the USA.

It depends on what part of the USA, obviously

Also, the Detroit area is still fighting the racial wars of Whites vs. Blacks. The mostly live apart (I was unusual, being White in a Black-dominated area because it was close to my school). Many suburbs of Detroit don't allow buses because it would bring Black people into their suburb.

I'm not kidding.

Oh my, that's horrible Philly has a lot of black people but a great deal of them lives in North Philadelphia. (at least this is what I've heard)

As for here in West Chester, I actually live in the ghetto area where all the Blacks and Latinos are (but I'm Latino so whatever )

The buses here are always at least 5 minutes late, in the summer. 15 in the winter. Sometimes 30 or more. Kinda useless that way...

Oh shit... I did not even remember I made this topic. D:

I should not post while being super tired! :specialed:

And yeah I should mention that I kinda live out in the middle of nowhere so the next bus is normally 2-4 hours later. Same goes with the next bus before, so catching an earlier one is just not practical, as I would get no sleep at all then.

Haha. Portland TriMet FTW!

First off, all bus times are set expecting them to stop at every stop. Then, there are multiple lines at each stop. All of which are mix-matched for efficiency in rider use. So if one line is used more to reach a certain destination they will alter said bus route/stops.

Some areas of the city actually has active time charts which display "bus ## arriving in ## mins. to [area]".

They also try to factor in the stop points along the way. So at most I've had a bus only a few minutes late, and only because of a car crash somewhere up the road or gridlocked lanes.

The bus system in Bangor is...alright. I always go early as a precaution if something happens.

The stupidest thing however, is that almost all the buses make their last run at 5:15 P.M. (the last bus makes its final run about 5:55). It borders on INCONVENIENT AS ALL FUCK, but I love the bus system regardless.

If nothing else, there's a nice motley crew of uglies to look at and make fun of. :p

I remember those in Ulm, Germany. They should put them in Seattle

Seattle has static time charts that show what times each bus get to a given stop, at each stop where that bus runs. However, the stop listed on the sign is not necessarily the stop where the sign is posted

Like, I'll be at 12th and Pine and it'll say "Bus leaves 23rd and John at...". When I was less familiar with Seattle's streets, I got really confused.

We've got those here, too (Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt/Main), but they've got their own share of problems - they're a good general indicator, but you shouldn't exactly rely on them if you're in a hurry, as they tend to show ex. "arriving in 3 minutes" when the bus is already at the stop, or keep showing "arriving in ..." for a bit after the bus has already left.

Overall, the bus service here is mostly reliable, more or less on time (depending on the line), unless there's any kind of event going on; "event" here as in a festival or fair, or something like bad weather. If an important street is blocked, the former almost always results in (in my opinion) nonsensical/overly long detours and late-running busses; the latter, especially when snow and ice are involved, tends to disrupt service quite badly.

What really sucks, tho, is how busses on some lines - such as one of the two that goes to our district - are always crowded beyond belief, despite already being articulated busses (long, bending) and going every 10 minutes. Don't think the service operators can do much if anything to fix this, but it still sucks.

It's just a bit of route learning, I guess. I could probably figure out the bus system with a little poring over the pamphlet. Then again, I am absurdly smart like that, so...

I used to take the bus all the time when I was younger. It was a HUGE pain. Smelly people, standing while the bus is moving, no room, late buses, early buses, crazy drivers, accidents.....
