Congratulations, morons, you've just turned the entire country against you.

Not only did they do this, the elected government PROMISED that they WOULDN'T DO THIS, so as to put them in favour with the student population. Thanks for the backstab, douchebags.

I can't help but think that that's still cheaper than the tuition charged by a lot of US colleges, but on the other hand our college payment system is rather screwed up and I would certainly not advocate modeling anyone else's after it.

You have to remember that Britain is a rather student friendly place. At least it was until the government did this to us. I doubt I ever get into university now. I could probably afford £3000 with my life savings and loans but paying £9000 just is not right. I basically lost out on my whole education thanks to this .

My alma mater charged about $10000 USD for tuition...per semester.

I mostly went there on scholarships and a special fund my parents had set up.

I generally dislike violence in protests, but I can totally understand (and almost agree with) in this case.

I mean, in the end it's not about the total amount. It's the fact that it's 3X the price. Think of ANYTHING you need to buy on a regular basis. Now tell yourself you'll have to pay 3 times the price. Not a fun thought.

EDIT: also, their new cost > my yearly salary right now

This sucks, but keep in mind this, too:

The UK government will continue to offer student loans to cover tuition fees. The loans are to be paid back by graduates at a rate of 9% per year once their income level passed a threshold of £21,000 (U.S. $33,200) per annum. If the debt is not cleared within 30 years of graduation, it is cleared.

Even with this tuition hike, the loans are a lot less shitty than they are here.

They deserve every backlash they get for pulling this stunt. Such bastards; hope the students revolt or something.

If this takes effect right away, I can see one of my really good friends being forced to pay a ridiculous amount for his final semester. That's totally not cool at all. =/

And I thought we were getting a raw deal here. Sheesh.

Well, it's a start, but not exactly a revolt...

There have already been several student strikes. I would've joined them, if I hadn't already missed a week because of snow.

The biggest slap in the face for me is that Scotland and Ireland will still be getting University cheap.
Where's the justice in that?

I don't think this is a good idea at all, I can barely afford to pay for University as it is since I come from a family with next to no income. Student loans do help but £9000 is far too much to pay just for tuition fees considering you'll only be getting around two hours of lectures a day. Add the accommodation fees to that and you'd be looking at something like £12000+ a year, which really is a lot of money to be dealing with at this stage of your life.
University should be for the people who want to learn, not just for the people who have the money.

Well looks like if you want to get an education, you'll have to go out of the country for college. =/

My Brit friend told me, however, that the price hike won't take effect until the next school year, so that's a small silver lining, I guess.

This happened in Puerto Rico but for much less money, I don't remember the amount but when the government proposed a tuition hike, students went on strike and they've been at it on and off since last Spring

£9000 is about $15000~ USD which is pretty much what I'm paying for college here, and I can barely afford food and rent
