I am a moral nihilist. Apparently people think this is something bad, does anyone agree?

Guy on AiB in a "Wonderful Life" blog: "Remember why you're here. You're not here to hate, destroy, have contempt, or take revenge. You're here to make happiness, comfort, sanity, and peace for all people."

Me: "Says who? Last I checked, life had no set standards beyond that of society. I don't mean to turn a good blog bad, but I feel this must really be pointed out. We're not here to do anything, we're essentially meant to do nothing. How we treat others and ourselves is nothing that can have restrictions put on it."

Another guy: "@sails
i feel sorry for people who live their life in accordance to nihilism
i'd rather believe in something than lose hope in everything
and i'm not even a religious type of person to begin with"

Isn't it natural to accept nothing but truths? Why would it be so different to apply that logic to so-called morals?

I'm also a nihilist. I don't really like being a nihilist, but I'm not going to lie to myself about my beliefs.

As for the moral part, well, morality is a very complex subject the more in-depth you look at it.

Well, it really depends on how big of a picture you're looking at.

Taking everything into account, then, yes, our existence is probably meaningless. However, this is not a very practical philosophy, as the only things that it does not render meaningless by extension are mostly unknowns, and it is not without its own presumptions. Therefore, you're better off focusing on worldly matters.

Looking at the human species, we are obviously very social creatures. As such, we do much better as a species when we cooperate and avoid things like killing each other too often; those who had the ability to work together and suppress their urges to murder often wound up surviving longer than those who did not. Over time, these traits became what we now refer to as morals, and they still serve a vital role in our survival as a whole.
The closest thing to a purpose that any given species has is, in fact, to survive, so abiding by these social guidelines should certainly be part of this purpose.

Anyway, the definition of a moral nihilist is "a person who rejects all moral principles," so on the grounds that morality is essential to the survival of our species, I am willing to say that being one is "something bad," but unless this has actually driven you to become antisocial, I wouldn't really be concerned about it.

It's not like I'm saying we should all be murdering each other, but I feel that it's wrong for people to say this and that are things we have to or should do. I reject that we have staple reasons for things because none of them are absolutes. I often refer to how in the end we're all just animals and that in reality it should be expected that we kill or hurt each other just as animals do. Another I find myself using is when someone says something is weird or abnormal (Often in the sense of "growing up") and that it's wrong for doing so (Such as playing video games all day), that it's nothing but a standard created by the morals of society and that the person is wrong for thinking so.

If you're operating under a non-religious viewpoint (using a rather broad definition of religious viewpoint, I guess) then to claim that there's a "reason" for being here is kind of illogical, I guess I have to agree there...

I wouldn't go as far to say that morality in general has no legitimate basis, though... that would end up swerving into utilitarianism, I guess.

I rather would believe in something than in nothing. Reason? It keeps me from getting severely insane and hopeless.

Believing in something is a human trait that would probably be incredibly rare for animals to have. Ironically, believing in nothing might as well be one belief system humans have created to make some sense in the world, even if the essence of it is nothing.

I don't believe in nothing, but I also don't believe in anything, if you can understand that.

I can't believe that the Christian God exists because the Bible is full of paradoxes and conflictions. I also can't believe in any of the other gods that are worshipped because they just don't make sense. However, I can't believe that we just appeared or that we were always there. The Big Bang is the closest theory that I can believe, but it doesn't explain everything.

Believing in nothing makes me happier, because in that event, there isn't an irresponsible sadist making my life miserable.

The thing that I dislike more is "it's something people do, so it's unnatural, and it's wrong."

Homosexuality, climate change, environmental change, endangered species, faith, the list goes on and on.

As for nihilism, there's nothing inherently wrong with that, but I imagine that not everything wants to have people rubbing the flaws of their beliefs in their faces, not unlike how you don't want them to rub their beliefs in your face.
