| From the article, it seems all people really have to do to avoid it is not swim in ponds and such, and keep your pool clean. Not as scary as the article portrays it, although an increase from an average of 2.5 a year to 6 is a rather large increase percentage-wise, it's still only 6 people in an entire year. ____________________ Now I have a signature. The amoeba typically live in lake bottoms, grazing off algae and bacteria in the sediment. Beach said people become infected when they wade through shallow water and stir up the bottom. If someone allows water to shoot up the nose -- say, by doing a cannonball off a cliff -- the amoeba can latch onto the person's olfactory nerve.
