Very Interesting.

So it appears that these people who I liked for Netscape and developing TCP-IP have come to shut down people like Mark Zuckerburg, by making a new protocol that cannot be tracked ala TCP/IP and thus will return anonymity to the 'net.

While people may still hand out their data like candy, the new protocol will by default be set to give people privacy as far as being tracked across the internet goes.

While also reducing bandwidth issues, potentially nuking the entire debate over caps and overage charges.

I hope technology succeeds in smashing these things, as they have been truly a bane of a properly free and open, privacy-friendly internet.

CCN will cache content as it passes along the network and remember where it's been delivered. The next time somebody requested a hot story, CCN would remember where it was last downloaded and potentially direct you there, instead of to those central Google News, TMZ, Twitter or LA Times servers.
Sounds like what Freenet already is. Completely decentralized and encrypted. Every node caches some of the content passing by. All the files are just "floating" out there in the data stores of thousands of machines, accessed and retrieved by a unique ID.

Being able to contact a server directly though still has its uses, such as gaming and content generated on the fly. They are making progress in emulating such direct connections though; last I heard they were able to tunnel IRC, though with latency on the order of minutes. Improving this should be entirely possible, but not easy, and I doubt it'll ever be fast enough for games or telephony without a direct connection.

Only real issues are it's unpolished (still needs some UI work, some kind of name resolution, etc), heavy (Java ), and the anonymity attracts some rather nasty types... Still it definitely works and is far beyond being a proof of concept for this CCN idea (and it uses TCP/IP ). I can imagine these issues being quickly resolved with this kind of help, and some significant gains from implementing such a system as its own protocol. Pretty ambitious though...

That download could be on a local router or the smartphone of the guy sitting next to you on a plane.
In other words, your machine will participate in caching the content (just as on Freenet). That means your upload bandwidth usage will be significantly higher than with the current system. Sounds like a great reason for ISPs to disapprove of the idea. Why, they'd have to provide reasonable upload speeds! *gasp* Then there are all the greedy types who won't stand for users having actual privacy (they make a lot of money selling your personal information!) and will be certain to spread all sorts of nonsense to convince people it's a terrible idea...

CCNx has a mix of portable C code and Java.

Well, yes. The solution is to just make current style ISPs irrelevant. New ISPs offering CCNx/Freenet/whatever connectivity can run old ones off the road by both saving money (distributed stuff spreading out the usage instead of letting it be concentrated) and also ducking legal issues (with stuff spread out everywhere, lawsuit mechanisms currently in use would have a harder time figuring out where it came from).

Just like in the pre-DSL days, they'd give you 56k and call that horrible speed 'good' unless you wanted to pay astronomical amounts for ISDN (which sucked) T1 (Only good for LARGE users) or similar.

It is my hope that technology can outpace corporations, leaving them flat-footed and stupid in the face of progress. Maybe it won't happen, but... it's something to hope for, I guess.

Hm, the problem is the usual one- the current ISPs, at least in the United States, own infrastructure (the cablecos and telcos). Building parallel infrastructure is possible, but it's expensive...

And I'm not sure decentralized systems would provide much cost-savings from the service provider's perspective... and let's face it, they'd have more lawsuit problems... RIAA/MPAA: "We can't track this, shut it down!"

Hence why it needs to be developed more--make it truly compelling, to the point where it is too much to ignore.

Just like DSL and Cable came on the scene and compelled infrastructure be built, even though ISDN and similar were already there.

In this case, I'd guess make CCNx easy to implement and cheaper to run than TCP-IP.

Hopefully so, but then I'd be concerns about workarounds for the privacy thing and they're still ganking your information anyway.

Maybe it's just cynical me, but I can only see it lasting a little while. However, if it becomes easily available, I'd be down for getting it if it's also at the right price.

Well, it's a future technology--so it means either it'll never get developed/flop, or eventually find a niche.

The size of the niche determining whether it dethrones the internet's main protocol (TCP-IP), or just becomes an option sold on the side by ISPs (probably for inflated prices.)

This is essentially what I'm expecting to happen.

It'd be like companies saying "Would you like your identity or your wallet raped?". Neither option is that great unless you've somehow amassed an Oprah Winfrey fortune.
