Want to edit levels?

Put -devmode in your command-line. Press F1 to enter the editor. Press F1 again to exit the editor and play in your level.

dev mode also enables some other editors too, F3, F4, etc, open stuff.

Editor:

If you have black bars in SMB, you'll need to move your mouse pointer further down to be able to click on the NEW/LOAD/SAVE buttons and other UI elements while in the editor.

If you want to be able to save new levels, you need to create a Levels directory in the SMB directory.

Note: don't use new level, the palette thing is bugged. Instead, when starting the game, add the command-line: -palette palettefile.lp

Where palettefile.lp is one of the following:
4bit1.lp
end.lp
factory.lp
forest.lp
gb.lp
glitch.lp
hell.lp
hospital.lp
rapture.lp
retro1.lp

It'll start you with that palette.

Editor binds:

Mouse1 - place whatever
Mouse2 - clear whatever
MouseWheel - change whatever
WASD - move view
QE - zoom out/in
Z - change to 'set piece mode'
X - change to 'parallax mode'
C - change to 'camera mode'
N - change to 'animal mode'
L - change to 'lighting mode'
Y - change to 'animated piece mode'
T - change to 'tile mode'
B - set player spawn point to where mouse is

Setting your character in dev mode:

You can set the character you play too in devmode, you can put the following on the command-line arguments for SMB: (only works if -devmode is specified).

-devmode -char #

4 = 4-Bit Meat Boy
5 = Dr. Fetus
6 = Brownie
