Note: The following article may not be accurate.

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people were once again subject to the whims of homophobia and religious and cultural extremism this week, thanks to a United Nations vote that removed “sexual orientation” from a resolution that protects people from arbitrary executions. In other words, the UN General Assembly this week voted to allow LGBT people to be executed without cause.

Me in IRC when Lain linked us to this article:

<Terra> what.
<Terra> the.
<Terra> FUCK.

It's sad how homophobia and religious fundamentalism constantly find ways to enshrine themselves into law. Seriously, why does the concept that other people have same-sex relationships bug so many people to the point of wanting said people to die?

Because it's something easy for the plentiful lemmings of Earth to point their sinister fingers at so they can disregard their own shortcomings, sins, wrongdoings, etc... As long as they're all in agreement that homosexuality is "bad" then unfortunately they'll be happy to attack it vehemently, though they easily forget that their God is the true judge.

The fact that this was passed in the UN just plain boggles me. I'm starting to think that the article is a hoax, it just seems a bit too far-fetched to be true.

Why are things like these even up for voting again?

There is a reason they where set in the first place, so countries would shape up, not vote it down and keep going with whatever a specific section of human rights are against. :/

What the actual fuck!?

Hey, douchebags! The Bible doesn't dictate the fucking law!

I mean, what the hell? People are screaming out for tolerance and equality, LGBT people are quickly becoming more accepted and then this shit happens? Why stop at execution? Why not allow murder? It all equates to the same damn thing.

Bigotted morons.

I can't imagine that it just means that they're going to round up some gay people and blow their brains out without consequence or something.

I dunno, something feels a little fishy to me. Just a gut feeling. It doesn't seem right.

I'm looking through everything I can find on the UN website, and I'm finding no mention of the "press release" alluded to that definitively confirms this.

The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, but...

Considering many of the UN's councils are stacked with nations that hate GLBT, and also that the UN's mandates are usually ignored by the nations which do bigoted things... it doesn't surprise me either that this is real or fake. In the end, nations which want to kill people for sexual orientation will do so no matter what the UN says.

It'd require actual armed UN intervention to stop.

The best thing that you can do about these fund-a-mentalists is to fight them sneakily, which is the same thing they do to these other people; tell them to fuck themselves twice. This is the only way to ensure everyone's freedom.

Uh... I read this as simply "sexual orientation is not a factor in halting arbitrary executions". Add to that the inaccuracy stated...

I was actually thinking something like this, too... but I wasn't quite sure how to phrase it. The word "arbitrary" is what seems to be what's setting sparks off, however... but the context can be taken in a very agitating way, and a way which is substantially less so. ( Arbitrary definitions... most people may jump to thinking about number one (Determined by chance, whim, or impulse, and not by necessity, reason, or principle), instead of thinking about it in another context (Established by a court or judge rather than by a specific law or statute). However, it's entirely possible I am missing some form of context... I'm prone to that, sadly.)

My personal view: If someone's done something really warranting of execution, I wouldn't expect (or want) something like sexual orientation to stop it anyway. However, depending on the judge (whether or not they were an utter asshole and a bigot), it could push them to go for execution when they normally wouldn't... it's a double-edged sword, of sorts.

Hoooly shit this is one of those more nerve-wracking posts. I hope I haven't worded anything poorly or miscommunicated any of my thoughts.

pretty much this. Its obvious the writer of the article either didn't understand or chose to take it in such a context as to make it look as horrible as possible, but obviously the UN would never allow for blatant homophobia. You know, the unity that is established to, among other things, help promote world peace? In the context Viola pointed out I personally don't see how it is even a problem...it is saying that sexual orientation would not give you any special privileges above anyone else in these cases. And really...why should it, it should play no bigger factor than race in decisions like that. The only way we can ever truly abolish intolerance is if we stop treating everyone like they're so different already. And yeah, arbitrary definitely has more meanings than the one people are up in arms about, so...you know. Not all systems of government work the way we do, a lot of times a crime is bad enough that a court will order the execution over the state or whatever, I'd imagine, and if a person has committed a really serious crime...well, to exempt them on the grounds of their sexuality is a bit ridiculous, as it would be to exempt them on the grounds of race or gender or any other such factor for that matter.

TL;DR the way the article was written is obviously either twisting or misinterpreting the context, and this really isn't as big of a deal as everyone makes it out to be, hence why there's little to no mention of it in UN press releases that we can ourselves find.

Oh, I'm sure this was done intentionally. Reworded to blow it out of proportion and focus on fear tactics instead of straight news. In other words, the news.

The press release they were talking about.

Umm... seems to roughly match up with what was said.

Also, "arbitrary":

Though I am unsure if same-sex marriages are right or wrong (unlike yesterday), I don't think gays should be executed. A better way is to hold peaceful protests.

I find it amazing that people are still executing people in general, nevermind sexual orientation.

Yep, Capital Punishment is one the most controversial legal actions, along with abortion.

Yeah... arbitrary execution in general are bad. I don't think telling countries which do that to exempt LGBT people is going to fix how random and bad a bunch of random killings of people is.
