So last night my laptop's DC power connector went bad... again. The first time it happened a few months ago as a result of being dropped 3 feet on its side with the power chord plugged in. This caused the back of the plastic inside and the pin to break off from the motherboard, ceasing all charging capabilities. I ordered a new DC adapter off ebay and had my friend come over to try and install it. Try as we may, the remaining bits of the broken DC plug would not be de-soldered. My friend, being the genius that he is, had the idea to use fresh solder to jimmy-rig it the pin back to the motherboard so at least there would be a connection and charging could resume. Lo and behold it worked! I superglued the plastic back together around the pin and closed the laptop up.

Come to a few weeks ago it worked perfectly well. Then it started not recognizing that the power chord was plugged in unless I fiddled with the angle. Eventually I had to wrap the chord underneath the laptop cooler I use so that it would keep it taught. This got worse and worse with how tight I had to keep the chord plugged in. Last night, it cracked the plastic and pin again. Or I should say it broke our jimmy-rig. I decided it was time to get it fixed properly so I called a laptop repair place here and asked a price. They said $150. I explained I had the motherboard out and the part, just needed them to remove the old and put on the new. They said minimum $60. Well, I couldn't find the DC adapter I bought off ebay months ago when it first broke so I asked how much for the part, $30. I get down there, "Oh, we don't have that on in stock..."

Now I'm calling my friend to see if he can come jimmy-rig it again. No answer and no call back from my voicemail. Then it occurred to me, just buy my own soldering kit! I went down to The Shack (Radio Shack for all you oldbies), bought a solder pen and silver solder... 15 minutes later it was working again and I proceeded to put my laptop back together (a 30 minute process, laptops are much more complicated than desktops).

What amazing successful or drudgingly unproductive adventures have you had trying to solder something?

I fixed control panels for industrial hairdryers belonging to my neighbor. They looked okay, but some solder joints had cracked when the machines were knocked over.

Other than that, I haven't soldered anything in forever.

I also tried to fix my M3 Perfect once, by replacing the internal battery with a 2 AA holder, on the hunch and likely false information that the battery dying makes it stop working. It's more likely crappy soldering job on the very delicate, fine BGA chips. Kinda disappointing for how much it costs, but it was a common problem. Cheap Chinese crap. It worked great otherwise when it worked, best flash cart out there back then and probably even now, but the build quality is dreadful. Of course, GOOD flash carts are out of vogue in preference of cheap crap that can only run pirated ROMs with any reliability or usefulness. Can you tell that the general attitude of the people left me a bit bitter? The DS was pretty neat and a nice handheld with the extra fast RAM and very fast disk access of the card that I had.

I did soldering once in school, mine was one of the only circuits which didn't work... I've taken that as a sign to avoid soldering in the future if I can.

It's amazing the nice, expensive things people will throw out when all they need is a single component replaced. 10 cents worth of parts and 5 minutes of soldering and you've got yourself a perfectly good TV or computer that someone just tossed away.

I did soldering on a school trip. I made a working metal detector and had fun doing it. I've still got it somewhere

I soldered some pipes together for a class back in 2005-2006. I miss that class, seriously.

I remember trying to build my own telephone at one point, but my mother was refusing to look for a soldering iron. The project has been dead for about ten years, by this point.

I have soldered together various circuits that do various things for electronics--LED lights, alarms, radios, etc.

I can design new things with special software and then create them out of parts--like I could create a $400 police light and siren system with a design I designed myself, if I should want--all I need is a programmable microchip and a few parts.

Let's go back to the late 80's-1990's and forget that the 21st century ever happened for the sake of our gaming, music, and reasonably sane technology. I would buy a new Famicom, Virtual Boy, Super Nintendo or Game Boy/Colour game if Nintendo started production again. Star Fox 2 would be great.

It does take a lot of work though, I fixed our monitor that broke but it took about 2 hours to fix, most of the work was just taking it apart. I love fixing broken stuff.
