I am surprised nobody has posted this yet as it's been crowding my top news stories since yesterday non-stop.

Basically, Wikileaks leaked confidential US diplomatic cables that are exposing how America's relations with the rest of the world really work and a lot of confidential conversations.

We have China ready to abandon North Korea, Arabs agreeing with Israel that Iran's a threat, Yemen Lying About U.S. Involvement in Air Strikes, The US forewarning India that some of the communications from its missions in Pakistan and Afghanistan could be “potentially embarrassing”, France not supporting Turkey's EU membership bid, and the Chinese government behind the attacks on Google earlier this year among other things....

That's too much to post here. They are releasing these gradually so there is a lot more to come. I wonder where will this take us...

I must admit that I'm positive towards this. Countries need to fucking shape up from all the shit that is going around. :/

I don't know on this one... I do think that the US government keeps too much secret, but on the other hand, diplomatic communications seem like something that there are very legitimate reasons to keep private...

Though a lot of this is stuff that people pretty much already assumed, now it's being "officially" released so people will have to give "official" reactions...

Let's go back to the late 80's-1990's and forget that the 21st century ever happened for the sake of our gaming, music, and reasonably sane technology. I would buy a new Famicom, Virtual Boy, Super Nintendo or Game Boy/Colour game if Nintendo started production again. Star Fox 2 would be great.

Releasing this information doesn't really change much, it just makes it messier. Other countries understand that Assange may release their stuff next, so they avoid acting too zealously over it.

Why is it that when I see this, I'm thinking that North Korea will be too busy trying to fix their relationship with China to go after South Korea?

Because the world does not work that way, Gabu.

I could have told you the China/North Korea thing a long time ago. The more you piss everyone else off, the less likely your allies are going to be to rush to your defense all the time.

I think it's... damaging to an extent but not a full-blown diplomatic crisis (yet). Hell, some of the stuff that's leaked might be things the target country in question already knew about a long time ago.

True, and like people are saying, it could get things out in the open and shit, but like that's going to happen. This is just one more wrench that somehow gained monkey properties.

WikiLeaks truly is awesome.

Thanks to this, seems that Shell has agreed to make a settlement.

Now let's hope there's a cable regarding the Bhopal disaster in 1984.

Does anyone else get a serious James Bond vibe from all this? ...except without James Bond?

US Government lobbied for Visa and Mastercard in Russia.

Basically, Russia wanted to set up their own credit card company, the US government lobbied for them to not do so because otherwise Visa and Mastercard would lose billions in revenue.

The line between government and corporation is blurring.

E: found link, Moscow suggests nominating Julian Assange for Nobel Peace Prize.

From the Guardian

Luke Harding has a great new line: Russia has suggested that Julian Assange should be awarded the Nobel peace prize, in an unexpected show of support from Moscow for the jailed WikiLeaks founder.

In what appears to be a calculated dig at the US, the Kremlin today urged non-governmental organisations to think seriously about 'nominating Assange as a Nobel Prize laureate'.

"Public and non-governmental organizations should think of how to help him," the source from inside president Dmitry Medvedev's office told Russian news agencies. Speaking in Brussels, where Medvedev was attending a Russia-EU summit yesterday, the source went on: "Maybe, nominate him as a Nobel Prize laureate."

Russia's reflexively suspicious leadership appears to have come round to WikiLeaks, having decided that the ongoing torrent of disclosures are ultimately far more damaging and disastrous to America's long-term geo-political interests than they are to Russia's.

Look out for the full story later.

This is starting to look more and more like a sci-fi movie

The Poison Pill. The Doomsday Files. Or simply, The Insurance.

Whatever you call the file Julian Assange has threatened to release if he's imprisoned or dies or WikiLeaks is destroyed, it's impossible to stop.

"It's all tech talk to say, 'I have in my hand a button and if I press it or I order my friends to press it, it will go off,'" said Hemu Nigam, who has worked in computer security for more than two decades, in the government and private sector.

"Julian is saying, 'I've calibrated this so that no matter how many ways you try, you're never going to be able to deactivate it,'" Nigam said. "He's sending a call to action to hackers to try it. To the government, he's also saying, 'Try me.'"

There's a reason Assange specifically announced -- on the Web -- that there is a 256-bit key encryption code that only a few trusted associates know that will unleash the contents of the 1.4 gigabyte-size file.

"He's saying don't even bother trying. It will take you so long to succeed that by that time, it will be too late," Nigam said. "Most of the time, you see a 56-[bit]key encryption. That's considered secure. When you are using 256, you are sending a message: 'I'm smart enough to know that you will try to get in.'"

.... there's more

I just wish they'd leaked all this stuff on the 5th of November. Either way it's fantastic to see all this getting out to the public, and actually kind of interesting to watch all these major forces (corporations and government alike) now pretty much directly attacking Wikileaks, as more and more rise to defend them.

The revolution will not be televised.
