It's been 20 years since the Super Famicom has been released in Japan.

This is a useless post.

So it's not the 20th Birthday of the SNES at all, but of the SFC... have to wait until 2011 for that one.

But since the SNES and SFC are basically the same, hardware-wise, and played the same games... this may also be a useless post...

Happy birthday to the Super Famikon

And I didn't get an SNES until 1999 or 2000 (I can't remember which). Damn stingy parents.

Happy birthday!

I don't have an SNES myself, but I know someone who has. When I was small I always loved playing with the DYDDY code in DKC

I wish my SNES didn't absolutely fuck up.

I've been playing a lot of SMW hacks the past couple days, actually...

I want to fix it.

Maybe opening it up and cleaning any gunk off the chips will fix it.

Mine is in a box somewhere, doing nothing.

I sorta missed the entire SNES generation, since I was a Genesis person to the death.

I've actually been tempted to do this sometime... I just don't really know everything I need.

Isn't there a way to clean the internal cartridge connector, as well? I've cleaned the externals to death, but I never knew how to get the SNES's... but I dunno what's up since ONE game (Kirby's Avalanche) works with no issue at all.

Ah, so it's probably a problem with the sound chip (IIRC, Kirby's Avalanche did not use the SPC700)... hope you're good with soldering and desoldering chips

Paulguy's Post configuration
Games can't access the sound synth directly as far as I know. It's more likely the game used a slave program on the SPC700 and controlled it from the main CPU.

It might have more to do with ROM size or mapping or something, I guess. could be that a pin or 2 isn't making contact and that one game doesn't make use of it... which would be odd, unless it's especially small. Not sure, though, the ROM is 1MB.

Maybe the board is thicker than the rest, providing the extra needed pressure against the connector pins? Have you used a game genie with this a lot? I hear they can stretch out the connector because they're extra thick or something. If you have a game genie, it might be worth seeing if the games work through that.

Isopropyl alcohol, paper towels, and paperclips. Smaller paperclips are better.

The easy way is to wipe alcohol on a cartridge and use it to scrub the connectors.

The harder way is to wet a paper towel with alcohol and use a small paperclip to push it into the connector and wipe it out. It's a lot easier to reach the connector if you open the SNES. (And if you really want to, you can remove the connector to clean it.)

Yes, I did just take apart my SNES.

My PAL console still works, but although in about 20% the console just shows "nothing", just switch off and on, it runs file. Even all save files are still there.
Just checked, Lufia II still has its old saves, 97 hours, about about 40h of that time sunk into the Ancient Dungeon.

And, yes, happy birthday, SNES. At least this thing just worked, no need for firmware updates and such. Switch your console on -> play. But it would be unfair to diss any recent console, as these beautiful graphics just need to be loaded - and unless games come on SSDs (which probably will not drop considerably in price the next time), some loading still will be there.
But then there's games like Colin McRae: DiRT2, which mask these loading times pretty good.

I don't know if the previous owner did, seeing as I bought this used (in 2004, and the place I got it from died)... but I haven't, myself.

Maybe I could pick one up? I'd have to find another place to put the SNES, though, seeing as there's not too much vertical space where it is now.

Well, skip that! Found my SNES games!

Man, I can't wait to load this up and celebrate its, roughly, 20 year anniversary soon! Even though my SNES is in pretty bad shape. =/

I have 3 Model a NTSC SNES consoles (1a, 1b, and 1b; each with different comparability with cheat devices), and my SNESjr.

Thank you Nintendo for making one of the best (if not the best) gaming consoles of all time... so shitty that you don't make any more games for it, or allow anyone else to.

Let's go back to the late 80's-1990's and forget that the 21st century ever happened for the sake of our gaming, music, and reasonably sane technology.

Yeah, I have to wonder what today's generation of firmware update-based consoles will be like when their services are dead and down.
