For the past several months there has been an annoying whirring noise in my computer. Generally it would go away after a few good whacks to the back and not appear again until several weeks later. When it came back in the past month it wasn't enough, and I needed to lift the front of my computer up and hit it aganist the floor to get it to stop. Now it continues no matter what I do, and sounds like it'll only get worse from there.

I'm not asking how to fix the fan, because I know it could be ball bearings, cords being hit, etc, and dad an I pretty much agreed a new supply is in order anyway. I have a 305 Watt power supply for a Dell 4700 with a P4 processor. Thank God that model happens to be the few where a proprietary supply isn't required, but I would like to know of any leads where I can find a 305 watt power supply online with a 24-pin ATX connector, because it sounds like my fan isn't going to last too long, and we're kinda jumpy over what to buy and from where. I know I just want a new supply outright, and not a refurbished Dell PSU.

It'd probably be a better idea to get a higher-wattage power supply (400–500 or so), preferably from a trusted brand. 305 doesn't leave you much room for expansion if you want to add components to the computer later.

Using a higher-wattage power supply won't hurt anything (much like how a higher-amperage power supply typically won't damage a device), so don't worry about it.

I've actually got my old psu sitting right next to me, if I had the dollars I'd just ship it out to you...

What's the condition of the supply? And better yet, do the specs match up?

It's a 24-pin 375W. It also came out of a Dell and is not proprietary and is only about a year old!

Paulguy's Post configuration
Dell still puts those wimpy small power supplies in things?

Anyway, poke around on newegg or tigerdirect, I guess. Get something priced in the middle of the road, I'd say. In this case I'd say go for something about $50, from a reputable brand (Antec, Cooler Master, etc... just read the reviews.). It should last you a good long time, and probably last you a good few upgrades, assuming there aren't any freak manufacturing flaws, like my nvidia graphics card...

Actually, Newegg and Tigerdirect probably have massive deals going on right now, I'd snag a 500W if you have the spare change.

I will note, the Dell power supplies are rated differently from normal power supplies, so add about 100W to whatever they claim to be. Instead of peak power, they're rated by median power.

That said, anything which can plug into the motherboard and properly power it will do, as long as it is above 305 watts.

I see. I told my dad such, and he's pretty okay with getting a higher watt supply. Preferably for cheap, preferably for free even more so.

We'll search around for some 400 W supplies, but I'll definitely have that 375 W supply Crabbyboss offered on our minds.
