Have you ever had a moment in your life you wish you could go back and change? I'm sure we all have. Personally, I wouldn't change things because, well you know the old adage: if you kill a butterfly in the past, you will drastically alter the future. So I wouldn't want to change things at a fear that I would be a completely different person, and I'm happy with who I am now. But if really wanted to, I guess I would go back two years ago and not date my second girlfriend, big, big, mistake.

What about you?

I wish I had broken a few more noses and yelled at a few more teachers. Aside from that, I wouldn't want to change anything because it would change me.

I LIKE being me.

I'd figure out what the fuck went wrong in 2002 and redo that.

Seriously, wrecked my fucking life.

Eh, if I changed things, I wouldn't know a lot of the people I do now, which would suck.

Though I suppose I would pretty much just try harder in school and go beyond what was required of me, and take some advanced classes. Not only would I have been more prepared for university, but I would've had a better attitude towards school overall, and gotten more out of it.

Ohhhh, so there's a whole ton of things I'd go back and change, to be perfectly honest.

Coming here, however, is definitely not one of those things I'd change.

Oh there is tons I'd change, but a lot of it has the whole "tapestry" thing going on where you know, change one thing/pull one thread and your whole tapestry/life unravels. Mainly though, I want the chance to be able to live out certain days again knowing then what I know now. Like, I wish I could relive high school with the priorities in life I have now instead of going through it being a complete dumbass. If there was some way I could of spent that time doing design work, training, watching teaching company lectures, and managing my finances in my spare time, i'd probably be ahead of the game by now. Plus I probably wouldn't have wasted so much time and energy chasing some dork who has no interest in me for 4 years. But again, as a result that dork became a tapestry thread, so if I cut him out, I probably would have made far worse decisions down the road.

Speaking of which I wouldn't have been a complete idiot a few years later by pursuing some other dork who clearly had no interest in me and I just couldn't accept for some reason. If I knew then what I know now, the friendship would have still fallen through (I saw his true colors, so I know he's not exactly someone I want to hang around with anymore), but at least I'd have a clearer conscience knowing that I didn't actively fuck it up and ruin it.

I also would have spent more time with my grandpa while he was still alive and not distance myself so much. I've had tensions between a lot of people in my family who are now dead, but the only one where I really have regrets is with my grandpa.

And there are a lot of little things I've said or did in the past that were retarded/stupid/selfish/mean/or just wrong that I immediately regretted doing after the fact but couldn't change. I wish I could fix those things, but still remember having done them so I would retain the lessons learned from having committed them and know not to do them again.

Oh and there are plenty of purchases I would have never made, movies I would have never seen, books I would have never read, and plenty of other things that were just a waste of time and money.

I wouldn't have tried to date my best friend, now everything is really awkward whenever we talk and I'm still head over heels for her...

I would also go back and do well in school, then maybe I could have become valedictorian so I could have gone to college much easier. I had the know-how, I just lacked the motivation. I'm kicking myself for that now.

I think I would have ended up trying harder to convince my parents not to keep switching me between the public and parochial school system when I was younger, it didn't really work out at all, and I think that could have been avoided without issue.

But the butterfly effect is kind of scary in this sort of thing- oh look, your attempt to avoid some bullying has resulted in your family being killed in a car crash WAS IT WORTH IT

I wouldn't call it "the butterfly effect" as much as how changing things in your own past would affect you personally. There are many things we regret in life that we would like to go back and change, but having gone through those things and making bad choices helped us become the person we are today, and may have actually had more positive ramifications then we realize.

Even if you hate Star Trek, I think this whole episode explores the whole issue best:

<object width="640" height="385"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ccgmm6kb710?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

If you think that changing a bad choice you made in high school is going to result in the next Hitler coming to power, the world exploding, you never have being born, or all of your loved ones dying, then remember the words of Q: "you're not that important".

Simply enough, just the fact of obtaining such a power would drive me insane. So I'd do what anihilates the highest number of people as possible or something equally omnicidal.

If it doesn't, then most likely use it for something which I'll know at that moment.

With my luck, however, I'd probably discover that I'm my own grandfather if I go and change anything in the past.

There are a lot of things I think I'd like to go back and change, but then I realize if I had, maybe some other nice things wouldn't have happened. Still, I might, especially if I can undo a change that doesn't turn out well.

I probably would have gone to college elsewhere and not try to get into computer science. I was interested in programming my last 2 years of high school, so I thought I'd want to program for a living.

There's really nothing I would like to change because my life is so good at the moment, I fear any change might ruin it!

I guess I'd go back a few hours and pick the winning lottery numbers.

...Shit, why didn't I think of that? Good idea, I think I'll do that myself and pay off my college loans and crap.

My sister made me watch “The Butterfly Effect” on Thanksgiving, and I keep being reminded of it from this thread… Anyway, if my life was anything like the protagonist’s then I’d probably try to change a few things, but my life is actually pretty boring so there can’t be anything I’d change if nothing ever happened in my life. I suppose I could try doing better in school, but to do that I’d have to actually remember how things were before so I would know what to change, however that means I would feel like I was living my entire life twice, which probably would be too annoying to be worth the effort.

Also, if you go back in time to change something—like somebody dying—then after you change it there would be no reason for you to go back in time, creating a paradox. And if an alternate reality gets created when you change something, then wouldn’t it be pointless? You may have saved your friend’s life, but only in the new reality; in your reality it still happens. And because your friend never died in this world, you never went back in time, so there would be two of you. Or perhaps anything you do would only contribute to how things were originally. For example: the only reason your friend fell off a cliff is because your time machine pushed them off, and the only reason they didn’t land in a lake is because you accidentally parked it right where they would land, mistakenly thinking they landed at the location you moved their body to in order to prevent it from sinking in the water. And then when you try to go back to warn yourself not to time travel, you find out that you were that person that called during the thunderstorm when the line got disconnected before the person on the other end got to say anything, as well as that person that got killed in that car crash where someone was rushing to your house for some reason (you were trying to keep your friend from taking a hike) and lost control and drove into your propane tank, getting blown up beyond recognition, which, unbeknown to you, was why your friend wanted to take a hike in the mountains in the first place: to get some fresh air and try to get his mind off of that stalker that got blown up trying to kill you.

So in conclusion, it would seem that the only useful and safe (as in, not blowing up the universe due to a paradox) application of time travel would be to “rewind” time (as opposed to going through a wormhole which would mean there would be two of you in the past, and would likely make a new reality) for only a short “distance”.

…Maybe I’m over thinking this.
