Wikipedia to the rescue...

As for the Christmas scheme, I could always darken the visited link color a bit.

I do remember driving around to look at decorations a few times in the past.

Sometimes, we'll take new routes to... but nothing too extreme.

What I'd really like to do is go riding around this year.

If nothing else, there's a house about maybe half a mile from here that goes all out with the decorations every year. I'm gonna try to ride by that house at the very least sometime this season and go check it out. It's always a hoot to look at.

I've got one about half a minute's drive away. And they don't just do Christmas, they decorate a lot for every major holiday.

It's incredible. They actually had to install cameras to deter theft.

My parents tend to put a huge amount of lights out, and they'll sometimes put like a red/orange/yellow string of lights for Thanksgiving, white lights for winter in general, green lights for St. Patrick's day, etc. Too bad the mini lights can't be interchanged like the old C9s.

I'll just watch the news to see the really nice houses.

Trust me, every year they show some local houses... and those people have WAY too much time on their hands. Pretty though.

Oh really?

Mini incandescent lights are typically strung in multiples of 50. So long as the lights are only steady-lit, they are all interchangeable with other 50-bulb (or 100-bulb, or 150-bulb) strings. The same is true of multiples of 35, though I don't think those are as common. This is how I got a bunch of single-color strings of lights from several boxes of multi-color mini-lights.

Mini-lights with electronic controls typically use standard bulbs as well, but which kind of replacement you need (35 or 50) usually isn't obvious from the number of bulbs.

The only other kind of mini-lights have individual blinking bulbs. Working with these requires more knowledge than most people reading this care about.

Oh, and LEDs aren't standardized. Some don't even have replaceable bulbs. (Of course, those are the ones that are burning out on me.)

I always liked multi-colored lights. You know, strings of different colors.

It can be distracting sometimes to see this gigantic green or red glow coming from a house.

I like multicoloured lights in the sense of many colours on one string of lights. Single-colour strings can work too, but I'm sick of houses that use only (or almost only) white lights.

I've seen it cited occasionally that my hometown won't allow any lights other than white in the downtown area, because colored lights are considered gaudy and will ruin the aesthetics of the historic area... thankfully, we don't live in the downtown area.

I think some suburban housing developments have rules like that, too. I guess they want to make sure every McMansion looks the same as every other

Well, I will say in my town's downtown area's favor is that it isn't a bunch of McMansions... but I don't think it would be ruined by a little more color either.

I don't mind white lights at all, but not allowing any other colors...? That's kinda stupid.

What would they do if someone DID use colored lights?

They'd probably tell him that land of the free is an illusion, and that he has been living China this whole time.

I would assume since it's a law to keep the area looking "historic", they would use historically-accurate punishments: the stocks, hanging, etc.

One of the nearby local towns here actually (For over 60 years now) has an entire town display of houses with christmas lights and scenes.

People come around from a reasonable way to see the town's display every year. It is pretty cool, although there's always one or two houses that don't put in.

Still, small town and brings in a metric ton of local tourism.

Edit: Found a link.

Yep, there are a couple houses like that around here.

Remind me to start taking my camera with me to grab pictures.
