So Windows Vista had a list of updates, and I decided on a whim to let some of them update. Not sure what happened, but afterwards, every time I tried to open the IDT Audio Control Panel to change the volume, it'd say rundll had an error and had to close.

So, thinking it'd be somewhat simple to fix, I found FixCleaner from googling the problem and ran it a few times. Nothing.

Then I thought the next best thing would be to just uninstall it and then download and install again. Okay, I uninstall... and then notice, of course, that there's no sound whatsoever.

Right now, as someone with no computer knowledge, I think I got rid of a sound driver. Trying to find an install of IDT again doesn't lead me to anything right away and I don't know what to do.

I might have an automatic backup from before I updated, but...

Any help?

EDIT- I have a backup from three days ago, so I could try and see if that'd help, but...

EDIT 2- Bluh bluh, kinda posted too soon, found a download and sound seems to work. It's not done installing, either. So, uh, false alarm?

EDIT 3- Huh. Finished update, restarted the computer, and now it doesn't work again. Going to the Control Panel and accessing the IDT Audio Control Panel says that it's inaccessible and needs to be installed or enabled. ...?

EDIT 4- Okay. Finished installing, noticed it still didn't work. Uninstalled, changed System Locale from japanese back to english so I could understand what the hell the messages meant, installed again, restarted, uninstalled because it wasn't in the Control Panel, installed (ignoring this), restarted; then, when it still wasn't in there, checked Windows Update and updated IDT. It works very well now.

Jeez, was it supposed to be this complicated?

Contact the manufacturer of your sound card, or check their website... they'd typically have the drivers for download. =)

"A horrible person". That's what it says. "A horrible person."

We weren't even testing for that.

Yes, updates can be major trouble.

I had an update make my computer bluescreen whenever I tried to start it up. I had to painstakingly restore the system via System Restore, which was annoying. From this point, I stopped installing updates altogether.

I actually haven't been updating my netbook or laptop's 7 installs since February... considering my copy isn't quite that legitimate.

...Maybe that's partly to blame for all of my problems with it... but wireless shouldn't randomly die on me the way it does.

I don't understand how people always have so many issues with windows updates.

Me neither, I've never had a problem caused by an MS update here.

Windows Update hasn't given me an issue either.

It would, though, if I did it on 7... it'd be nagging me to buy it, which I can't really afford.

Heh, well, yeah, if it's a bootleg version, sure. But all these other people complain about some driver that shat itself or something. Do people just use really bizarre, obscure broken drivers?
