I think we got broadband pretty much when it came out. The only part of dial-up that I can remember was that it took 7 hours to download 1 N64 ROM. And now it takes maybe a few minutes?

Progress: Breaking the law, faster.

I never liked that. I know it has to send various noises along the phone line, but why does it also broadcast them into the room?

And how I remember it. Yes, it gave it some kind of high-tech feel, since otherwise it looked just like a box. Also, I guess you need the voices in case the modem has connection problems, so you can listen where the problem is.

I remember having dial-up the first part, until the at that time brand new broadband service was introduced.

I think I was about 15 when I finally got rid of dial-up. And sometimes when Comcast dies or I'm not home I get stuck with the magnificent dial-up speeds (not really that bad but may as well be...) of Sprint mobile broadband...

The sound bothered me after hearing it so many times. Especially during disconnects.

I left dialup in 2002 when we switched to Road Runner... and sometimes I actually do miss those dialup noises xD

I switched to DSL in 2003. I kinda miss those old sounds as well, personally. Maybe I'll go find an mp3 of it. :p

56k from 2003 until 2009, here. Got so tired I used someone else's DSL in summer 2009 for a few months, until it vanished... then got my own DSL line.

Good thing, too, since the 56k modem was starting to act up.

Speaking of which... I did return to dialup briefly in 2006, but then got DSL and finally cable... cable sure was a breath of fresh air, as I missed Adult Swim and GSN =P

Cable... bah. We're not even connected to cable to begin with.

This is also why the roof of this building is full of all kinds of antennae. It has to be 20 or more.

Some of them must be satellites, at least? Or is it just broadcast TV over there?

Well yes, but... there are none on the roof, instead everyone just bought his own dish and mounted it at the balcony or the wall. Because, why keep it simple when complicated works just as well?

Lots of buildings here have the same setup, especially if you walk around and take a look at some apartment buildings. Then again, they have to be aimed a certain way...

I believe I'm at either 10 Mb/s or 15 Mb/s, whichever is the standard Road Runner package =)

And just to think, cable Internet in 1998 was like .75 to 1.5 Mb/s =P

I believe I'm at 7 Mbps on my Qwest DSL.

I remember my parents' DSL being pretty bad, they probably had 1 Mbps or something. Still better than the dialup they had until 2008.

Way back before we had DSL at home, my mother had an ISDN line for her computer, I think it was like 128 kbps or so... more than twice as fast as dialup, but slower than pretty much anything else.

1mbps DSL, here. Speed's great, but there's issues somewhere along the line to cause me to disconnect so much.

I still get massively irritated at people complaining about speeds above ISDN, however.
