At least your school had you actually READ To Kill a Mockingbird. Our school wanted to pretend that the racism and anything else potentially controversial about it (like the entire freaking plot!) didn't exist. As such, we were only required to read 3 safe chapters that were scattered throughout the book, and treat each chapter independently of the other two. We also watched about a half hour of a movie based on it. As such, I learned nothing whatsoever from my sophomore English class, and I gained all my analytical and critical reading skills from studying J.R.R. Tolkien's works all year instead. I didn't understand the benefits of reading GOOD classic literature like Dante's Divine Comedy and Goethe's Faust, until well after graduation when I started listening to Teaching Company lectures. Same thing goes for history class. High school nearly killed any interest I may have had in history or literature. Luckily I can get good audio books now to teach me PROPERLY

I've been in the title a few times, and it makes my IRC window flash if I'm on IRC.
I don't mind, I think it's cool, but it tends to throw me off for a while.

That wasn't so much the main point that was brought up (from what I remember) in my class, but rather everyone kept calling the two main characters gay. They could be, but I just didn't find what the big fucking point was if they were.
This pretty much sums up what my English class' reaction to that book was, too.
