Divs didn't really take off until CSS, but even then, no one browser implements them with consistency, so the old tried and true Tables ultimately win any battle of 'Will it line up?' across browsers.

Hell, I still tend to prefer tables over divs. If you do basic stuff with divs they don't seem to have much issue on any browser at all, though text browsers might render the page a little bit strangely.

I have to admit I still can't get the hang of divs, the first version of this layout used what I thought was the most basic use of divs possible, and broke in Opera... So it's tables for me, then, even though they're not as accessible or something...

As I noted earlier, I'd use divs, if all the browsers supported them as well as they did tables. They don't, so whenever you use divs, you risk all sorts of wacky shenanigans happening on the browsers you don't test as much.

I use divs for my layout, but is simplistic anyway so there's not much that can go wrong.
