Then the people responsible for EZBread began changing everything, making it crap and terrible... however, around this time, there were more options for PHP-based message board software, like the GPL-licensed Invision Power Board.

Techokami: isn't Invision actually a pay forum, even more expensive than vBulletin now? You're probably thinking of phpBB or SMF. xD

Anyway, yea... I remember when people used Usenet for stuff like cheat codes, etc. and all those rumors with Pokémon, Final Fantasy VII, etc. =P

Oh yeah, there used to be websites that actually documented cheat codes, rather than just spamming you with ads while hosting "complete walkthroughs", hundreds of fake user-submitted codes, and Gameshark codes (vs actual built-in cheats).

I remember when people would use Javascript to remove the ads on EZBoard, so they retaliated by completely blocking the word "script". Hey guys, check out this movie ***** I wrote!

Yeah, but half those cheat codes were fake, and so you might find yourself desperately pressing 'A' for hours in front of the guy at the fisherman's house thinking that once you reached 1,000, you would get the Super-duper-magic Rod and be able to catch secret Pokemon...

Some simple websites from back then would still hold up today, mainly because of all the information packed into them.

I found the net 10 years ago... a bit of a cozier place. Lots of the social media aspects these days seem to be too in-your-face and such.

I'm actually too young to actually remember the internet in it's heyday but I used to love Super Mario fan sites back then. Two of my favorite will always be Nintendo Land and SMBHQ
Other then those websites I was only really going online to play web games, wasting hours on Cartoon Network Crossover RPG's from their website...

Alas. I tried to save both Nintendoland and SMBHQ.

The Liedholm Brothers decided to pick a child instead of me, whom then basically destroyed the old site and put up generic web 2.0 garbage.

SMBHQ's staff ignored everything I suggested, until the entire site just died as a result. Kyle Orland became a EGM writer and stopped caring, while Jay's PHD basically nuked his side.

Yeah, you had to have enough sense to spot the obvious flaws. ("Beat the game 100 times without talking to anyone" whoops, you have to talk to the Elite 4 to begin the battles, so much for that....) Besides, the good ones actually moderated their submissions.

I thought this thread would have something to do with BBS. :/ I asked my dad about our first computer and he said it was a 486 PC and they used to hook up to a guy in Batavia to download DOS games such as Commander Keen and Crystal Caves. My family actually had a website and we still do. Since 1996! Good old jsite.com. Here is a link to the Internet Wayback Machine displaying it. http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://jsite.com

Well BBS's were really before my time... but I do remember seeing occasional mentions of them back in the day, especially in text files that came from older downloads that started out on some BBS before someone put it online... I never tried to dial any of the numbers because I wasn't sure how I would justify it to my parents if it showed up on the phone bill

What can I say, I was pretty gullible back then... (and, er, probably still am) Though the thing about the original-series Pokemon games is that they were so glitchy, it could be hard to tell since crazy sequences of events did in fact do things on occasion... I mean, one of those "do ridiculous-seeming sequence of events to get Mew" glitches did in fact end up working, after all

Just found in Google some Usenet messages from 98-2000. I wonder if anyone stills use that? Before that, I remember those grayish sites in mozilla (no BG images!) and some hype over frames and animated gifs.

Going a bit back in time, I remember my first computer (I think I was 9 at that time), which came with a crappy a 2.4k modem (UGH). Somehow I got a copy of BananaCom (a simple ANSI terminal program) and discovered a few local BBSs. The best one had a think 5 simultaneous lines or so. A year later I was so hooked up I became SysOp of my own BBS, which used the RemoteAccess program (I think nowadays there's a telnet version of it if I'm not mistaken). Good times!

(feeling old now ha!)

I remember poking around on Google groups not too long ago, it seems like there are some communities still around on Usenet, niche interest groups that haven't bothered to migrate anywhere else...

And frames! I remember when they were the big thing, and then it quickly flipped the other way because of issues with URLs and navigation buttons...

yeah frames were an ugly hack. Didn't divs exist for a good while? at least as long as frames. Or even tables can be coaxed in to roughly acting like a div, and give you the same appearance as a frame, without the problems related to frames.

Also usenet is used a lot but mostly for piracy.

I'm not sure when exactly CSS became more common, but definitely there were tables... (even if those were later moved against too, they're better than frames)

Well, yeah, but I don't think the binaries groups show up on Google...

Yeah, our ISP also provides a newsserver but excludes the binaries groups, i. e. most of the fun. Usenet died this year when Microsoft decided to close all their usenet groups. (it won't take long until other companies like Opera decide to go the same way)

Also, it just oh so fits to the topic that Ask.com is going to close their search engine. Ask Jeeves was good in its time, around 1998, but that's long over now. Today they're mostly known for their spyware toolbar.
