Hence the raping of my childhood! As you said, SM64 still had the tone of a classic Mario game even though its gameplay was updated for for the N64. It felt like the natural next step in the Mario franchise. DK64 though had an entirely different feel to it though. It was really like a completely different type of game (i.e. banjo-kazooie/tooie) that had Donkey Kong characters slapped onto it. It was still good, but the feel of the DKC series wasn't there at all.

IDK, Rambi looks a little weird, like he's stoned or something. Somehow I think he should look more badass than that. It still looks fun though so I'm not complaining.

I don't like the overall cartoony feel. Donkey Kong Country looked way better.

I must disagree.

I like the new style, it fits the mood and tone.

Also, apparently this game is hard. 50 deaths in one stage hard. I need to dig up that link again.

Good. I saw the health bar and thought that this might be WAY too easy. I hope it's harder than NSMB. I completely found everything in that game fairly quick. Also, it would be awesome if you have to find stuff again like the DK and Bonus Coins from the old games to open up hidden worlds, the lost world, and the true ending. IMO, that's what really made these games fun.

Oh my god, DK64. I got that game, but failed to beat it by missing ONE collectible involving playing a crummy old arcade game.

All I can say is, that was terrible. It looks nice in the first couple stages, but becomes horrible later on. and could they have bothered to give K. Rool a new motivation? NOPE

This game on the other hand looks like a great way to fix the problems with DK: Bring back the glory days, and add new stuff as well.

The long and short of things are that this game is fantastic. Hard as a mofo, but fun. They even give you twice the health as the old-school originals! Retro has really captured the spirit of the old games while pumping in enough new blood to keep it from coming across like a resurrected zombie. Walking out of the demo session, my initial impressions to the guys were that I hadn’t been so pleasantly pissed off in a long time. Kirby’s Epic Yarn this is not; in fact, it’s probably the exact opposite in so many ways.

DK64 was my first N64 game, so I have fond feelings of it despite never even finishing it because of laziness regarding the last few items to get (including the arcade game one )

I liked the Donkey Kong Country (and Land... since GB/C games were cheaper ) games a lot, and it looks like they've done a good job capturing the spirit of those games, I need to get this...

Man, seems like the platforming genre is in maximum revival mode.

And you know what, I love it!

I was always a big DKC fan, so I am awaiting this quite eagerly DK64 wasn't so good because Rare finally went over the deep end in terms of pointless collectivitis (75% of all the bananas in the game? REALLY?) and minigaming. That game could have been so much more, unfortunately.

Still, 2D gaming goodness. I am excited. Just after I finish Super Meat Boy and Kirby.

Aww man.. I can't wait for this game. I loved the original trilogy, even though I've never beaten any of the games.

Used to own all three too, when I was ~12 though. I beat 1...but that's it. The exact level that I couldn't beat 2 on was the Slime Climb (somehow couldn't do that or get the want to go there much), and 3 was that one lightning level (never did make it far). If I tried again, my current level of IQ ought to be enough to beat those levels but...

Also I still want to call this Donkey Kong Country Revenge for some reason

Oh man, I agree with you there. Even if I play the game nowadays I still dread that level. Luckily I know the patterns and all now but back when i was 8 that was the hardest level. And it didn't help the save cave was on the other side of that level.

Given the apparent difficulty level, you may be right on that one.

I beat 1 and 2. Never got all the way through 3 if I recall...

Really guys? I thought DKC 2 and 3 were the easiest (and funnest most favorite) games ever I got 102% in DKC2 and 105% in DKC3 which I admit took a while being a kid without the internet, but hell SMW took me a while to find everything in too and I never considered it hard either (except tubular which was a bitch, but now I find the hard levels to be the most fun). I can beat all of these games in two hours blindfolded now. Its DKC1 that I never got around to completing 101% Somehow not having the bonus rooms give you bonus coins, DK coins, or passages to the lost world just gave me no incentive whatsoever to find them all. They felt more like a chore in this game. Especially when there was that one that can only be accessed one time in the entire game or you are fucked if you're going for perfect completion. In all of these games though, I did end up purchasing guides for them. There was a lot of stuff that was pretty well hid, and there were about 5 or so things per game that I just could not find to save my life, or took a lot of practice to get good at, but these are fun replay games.

I wouldn't say that they're easy. There's some reasonably challenging platforming in the secret worlds of DKC2/3 and K. Rool was certainly a test of patience. If you're trying to 100+% all three, then it does get a bit silly though.

There's nothing unbeatable, but they're not cakewalks. Compare to say, Kirby's Adventure or something...

Yeah, but when I think difficult games, I think Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, or anything else this guy has reviewed. These are pansy games in comparison. They're hard if you're young I guess, but there is WAY harder stuff out there. In fact, I thought these games had a reputation in the gaming community as being way too easy? Personally, I think they are a just the right difficulty level for me to enjoy them. If they were battletoads hard I wouldn't have had any patience at all, but these are challenging enough to get some replay value out them, while fun enough to make you want to play it to death. You could also start playing these games having never platformed before in your life and still get reasonably far before things start to get interesting. These are good introductory games I guess.
