I think math is easy. For that matter, math is also fun, and I can't wait to learn more.
Yep, math is easy.

Most of it's found in the -back- of the book too I often see...that made no sense to me. I've had calc classes start that way; you start on chapter 11 and do matrices and that crap before you tackle what's even in chapter 1.

They usually provide only the even answers, for self-checking. Odds are almost never printed, and that's usually what's assigned.
Hm, for me it's always the odds that are printed in the back and the evens that aren't.

Even then, rarely do they assign them without stating "Show all work" (), so having the answers is relatively useless...
ARGH "show all work" so friggin annoying. Especially when there are 6 problems that are of the exact same type and I have to show work on ALL of them. Why must I show that I can do it 6 times? Isn't once enough?!

Or when it's some piss-easy thing that takes 5 seconds to do in your head. You lose points for not explicitly writing "5 - 2 = 3". Fun.

I had an Algebra 1 Honors teacher that did this. Although I understood the material fairly well and correctly answered the questions on tests, I still failed said tests since I didn't show the work.

Because there are issues of cheating and what not. If people simply turned in the answers, the teacher has no way of knowing whether or not you really did the work. Plus, if you get things wrong, there is a possibility of partial credit. I think once you take the perspective from the other side, some things make sense.

The problem is, a lot of the time you get "show work" on foolish problems... even for things like simple arithmetic.

7. 8 * (9 / 3)
24 X Didn't show work

Basically meaning you have to waste time writing something like "8 * 3 = 24" which really says very little about anything, and just wastes time.

If you do it on the homework, you are more likely to do it on your test. Repetition is annoying, but more practice is better. I guess the debate is whether the math class is a place where to instill "values" of habit of paying attention to what you do. When you skip steps, and keep track of things in your head, you could make a mistake mentally. Seeing it on paper might deter such mistakes.

Doing things once may just be a fluke. Doing several times might be better. But the more you do it, the better at it you will be generally.

On the flip side, just because one person finds it easy, or can get it without trouble, doesn't mean other people can. The teacher is doing a lazy approach by just applying the same assignment to everyone, instead of individually evaluating understanding. Ideally, it would be better of teachers can do the latter, but they are a resource there isn't enough of.

Yah, that's retarded. Especially if you lose points in huge problems, and you don't write stuff like that (yeah sure, let's make it EVEN LONGER than it was)

(i.e solving limit related stuff can be annoying)

I can only conclude when given huge questions like that that schools hate trees.

At least my math teacher isn't so nazi about it

Example:

x3+2x2-4x-8=0*
x(x2-4)+2(x2-4)=0*
(x-2)(x+2)2=0
(x+2)=0 (x-2)=0*
Solution: x=+/-2; x=-2 is a double root.

*The only steps required.

Damn, I'd hate to see what you would have to do if the teacher pulled something like

∑[k=1 -> 10] 2k/3-ek
