You never had to abuse bugs in the original Kaizo, iirc. The game was just really really really hard, and had death-after-goaltape funtimes if you missed a P switch.

Maybe it was just me, but I could easily beat World 9 repeatedly, even though you've only got one life Hell, I know I had to intentionally lose just so I could continue instead of wrapping around for the third time...

World 9 of SMB2J isn't very hard. Plus I really like the funky colours and general oddities

The tough part is getting through worlds 1-8 without any warps. If you do use warps, there's an interesting trick where you can loop 1-1, 1-2, and 3-1 over and over to keep collecting coins and 1-UPs. Of course, that takes longer than the koopa stomp trick, but I always sucked at that.

You only need to avoid warps in the SMAS version, which almost seems like a mistake. In the original, you just have to clear all of the castles, meaning you can't skip any (though you can freely warp around).

To be fair, once you beat 8-4 (or 9-4 if you didn't warp) in SMAS, you go straight to A-1.

On the FDS version? Have fun beating the game 8 times to unlock the A-D levels.

Yeah, once I had a save state for SMB2J with 8 legitimate stars earned. Then, at some point, the save state got lost or ignored or didn't make it to a new computer.

I wonder how many people figured out how to get A-D. It seems like few would play a masochistic game like that 8 times and only then try A and Start. Fiendish, Nintendo.

More than likely, game publications + word of mouth. That's how many things were found out back in the day before internet was a major outlet for gaming info

So if you beat the game 37564 times you'd get to world 死-1 which makes everything kill you?

Did the japanese even have rumors like that?
