I think that getting apples was once common, actually, but then there was a certain scare in like the 1980s with razor blades andpoison, and after that, pretty much any Halloween goodies were packaged.
That's what I get for trick-or-treating at the Halfway house. (Halfway house is a mini-insanity ward in our city.)
And to clarify, this was my last time trick-or-treating as I had turned 18 and was forced over to door watching.

I never got forced to door duty, but I tended to like it and I often did it after returning home from trick-or-treating. I ran out of costume ideas after a while (my last year, I went as a soccer player of all things), so I decided to just stop trick-or-treating after age 13.
Probably apples. They went straight into the trash not so much because of any scares or anything, but... they were APPLES. My mother always had (and still has) a fruit basket in the kitchen with APPLES. Why do we need more apples?

I don't think I've ever gotten anything especially weird aside from maybe some obscure candy brands (Probably from dollar store or somewhere similarly cheap.). And I guess I got a pastry once, but by the time I got home it was all crushed and nasty, so I just threw it out.

Unlike most kids, I put them to good use with making card games that meant nothing to anyone except me. That was kinda my thing back then. I would make a lot of games and design them and everything, but had no one to play them with so I couldn't ever test them out.

I've made a few board games myself
One of them was basically a whole bunch of "Go forward 3", "Go back 8", "Roll again", etc. and you had to do all of it until you hit "Lose a turn", so turns became weird and unwieldy. Another was more balanced, it had a science-fiction theme and some spaces would move you, but you'd just end your turn there, and other spaces would have you draw a card for points (positive or negative). Still totally luck-based
